The Shadow Scholars documentary film on the Kenyan writers working for the #contractcheating industry airs for the first time on UK TV tonight (Wednesday 24 September 2025) at 22:00 on Channel 4. I had a small role in the documentary, and some of my thoughts follow.

Busy working on the support arrangements for new students who are joining us later this month and wish to notify us of disabilities and health conditions. One student has declared "I have procrastination". I am preparing myself for more comedians in lectures than usual.

London today is packed full of adults using busy streets to learn how to ride a bike. To his credit, one of them just tried to stop at a red light rather than cycle into me, but he couldn’t work out how to brake. Thankfully no harm done but take care if you’re on foot.

The perils of insecure university systems! Allegedly a load of people this week received an email from a UK university addressed to an Impolite name. The apology took a few days to appear. This is relatively tame in the grand scheme of things, but universities need to take cybersecurity seriously.

Multiple researchers were informed they’d been cited in a book published by Springer Nature. The problem? The papers they were claimed to have written didn’t exist.

Well done to my student Hashir Majeed for presenting at today’s Imperial College London Computing Project Showcase event. Hashir has developed, benchmarked, and evaluated an innovative tool that brings together student info from multiple sources and leverages LLMs to help teachers support pupils.

On the subject of technology, glasses, and exam cheating, I’m reminded of a 2019 news story, which proposed a very different solution. The Tobii glasses, to be worn by students during exams.

Sad to read that Jean-Raymond Abrial passed away recently. Computer scientists will know him as the force behind both Z and B, used to formally specify and describe computer systems, reducing the risk in safety critical situations. I think he would have had a lot to teach the vibe coders of today.

Fantastic to have caught up with my former MSc students at graduation today. And almost everyone is now working at a hedge fund. I sometimes feel I missed my calling in life. Plus, I narrowly avoided humiliation by catching my robe on the railings during the procession into the Royal Albert Hall!
