Our Marine Debris Team was out on Rettilon Road Monday in Bolivar helping keep our coastline clean!🚮🐢 We removed over 310 pounds of debris including almost 4,000 pieces of plastic! Thank you to our volunteers for making a difference and to volunteers who stayed to help us sort the marine debris!

🚨New patient alert!🚨 This juvenile green sea turtle was found entangled in fishing line along the Freeport Jetty. Thanks to the public callers who reported this incident to the 1-866-TURTLE-5 hotline, our GCSTR permitted team was able to jump into action to rescue this turtle.

This past Sunday, our Marine Debris Team removed over 119 pounds of trash from Brazoria County Beach Access #5, including more than 4,000 pieces of plastic. Thank you to our amazing volunteers for helping us making a difference! Plastic pollution is especially dangerous for sea turtles.

Yesterday, a green sea turtle was spotted struggling to dive and swim at Seawolf park. A concerned park staff member called the 1-866-TURTLE-5 hotline, which is answered 24/7, 365 days a year by the GCSTR permitted team.

As part of our GCSTR Marine Debris Program, we clean up multiple sites along the upper Texas coast to identify the most common types of debris and track how quickly it returns throughout the year. Our team recently removed nearly 40 pounds of waste from the North Jetty on the Bolivar Peninsula!

We had an incredible time celebrating the end of nesting season at GIB this past Saturday! We're so grateful to have such an amazing group of volunteers and were thrilled to recognize the Sea Aggie Sea Turtle Patrol's 10th season of patrolling the upper Texas coast.🐢

About 6 months ago, the Texas A&M University at Galveston - Marine Biology Department provided office space for the Gulf Center for Sea Turtle Research. We're just getting to putting up signs and are fully moved in.

Kristian Reynolds, a licensed veterinary technician, has joined our team as a Program Assistant in the Sea Turtle Hospital. In this role, Kris will support hospital operations by assisting with the medical care and rehabilitation of stranded sea turtles along the upper Texas coast.

We’ve recently seen a rise in reports of sea turtles accidentally getting caught on fishing hooks and lines. If this happens to you, it’s important to immediately call 1-866-TURTLE-5. This is the Texas state hotline for reporting sea turtles that are injured, stranded, nesting, or tangled in gear.

The GCSTR had a busy weekend responding to multiple stranded washback sea turtles! Washbacks are young turtles that have recently hatched and made their way to the ocean, where they drift offshore in floating mats of sargassum seaweed.

We’ve just completed our 10th season of Sea Aggie Sea Turtle Patrol! 🎉🐢 For the past decade, our dedicated morning patrols have surveyed the upper Texas coast, from Bolivar Peninsula to Galveston Island and Surfside Beach, in search of nesting sea turtles.

The GCSTR responded to an entangled green sea turtle off the Texas City Dike this past weekend. Entanglements like this are a huge reason for starting our new marine debris program! Discarded fishing line creates a hazardous environment for marine animals.

As we near the tail end of sea turtle nesting season (April–July) be on the lookout for washbacks and hatchlings along the beach especially after storms or high tides.🐢 If you find one, call the Texas statewide sea turtle hotline at 1-866-TURTLE-5 immediately.
