My first local Siphonophore - Agalma elegans - a few colonies seen yesterday and today in Pease Bay. Difficult to see, difficult to to photograph, difficult to make sense of but the parts of the colony that are visible here are gastrozooids and dactylozooids with stinging tentacles #siphonophore

My first ctenophores of the year at Pease Bay in lovely calm conditions yesterday: the Melon Comb Jelly (Beroe cucumis), the Sea Gooseberry (Pleurobrachia pileus), those two side-by-side for a size comparison, and the Common Northern Comb Jelly (Bolinopsis infundibulum) #ctenophores

Beautiful sunrise at Pease Bay this morning and my first Marbled Coronet was at the actinic to top up the PSL list to 2517. A spot of seawatching revealed a Minke Whale moving N and an unexpected Marsh Harrier coming in off the North Sea #PanSpeciesListing #teammoth #cetacean #scottishbirding

A little bit surprised to find Japanese Wireweed (Sargassum mutism) on the beach at Pease Bay this morning but I now see that there are several other records on the east coast of Scotland as well as further south - I’ve only seen it in the west before #invasivespecies @thembauk.bsky.social

Stumbled upon my first Charophyte today when pond dipping - not sure which species- anyone got any suggestions for an unidentified Stonewort?

Had a close look at a small marshy pool near Howgate that I often see Snipe feeding in during the winter - today the plants included Ivy-leaved Crowfoot, Floating Sweet-grass, Blinks and Bog Stitchwort - none of which I had knowingly seen before #panspecieslisting 2305

A bit of time at the microscope today checking moss ID confirmed a few new species including the Heath Plait-moss and Sphagnum fallax (stem leaf shown). I also bumped into this lovely Bronze Shield-bug today and in all now at #panspecieslisting number 2290

A new liverwort that took a little bit of effort. Spotted by luck when using microscope. A threadwort sp and given how sparse the leaves are thought I’d better find a perianth or two… Took a long time but confirmed hopefully as Heath Threadwort, Cephaloziella stellulifera #panspecieslisting no: 2283

My first pocket moss took me a wee while to identify yesterday and it turned out to be the Common Pocket-moss, Fissidens taxifolius. You can see where the pocket is in the leaf and it helps to trap water - presumably encouraging capillary action of water. #panspecieslisting number 2282

A few new species from Penicuik area today: Birch Woodwort, Spanish Gorse (presumably a garden escape), Tasgius morsitans - a rove beetle that seems to have very few records in Scotland and a common bog moss with cow horns Sphagnum auriculatum #panspecieslisting numbers 2279-2282

Working my way backwards through some photos from Monday’s plankton trawl and it looks like this diatom is Mediopyxis helysia - a species new to the #PanSpeciesListing site on Bubo. Species: 2278 (and another few hundred unidentified pics still to sort through 😂)@elizabethbeston.bsky.social

Saw my first St Mark’s Fly of the season yesterday emerging from the turf at Pease Bay. Clearly smaller than the classic species, I assumed that it would not be possible to ID but a combination of help on iNaturalist and the new Flies book nails it as Bibio johannis #panspecieslisting Species # 2277

Popped into the wee cave at Pease Bay today - some nice patches of Eucladium verticillatum on the roof and walls. It’s also called the Lime-seep or Whorled Tufa-moss and I think it’s common in other similar places #panspecieslisting Species: 2276

First Sand Martin and Chiffchaff of the year made me think there might be a few aphids around. A quick look in the front garden revealed Rose Aphid, Honeysuckle Aphid and Honeysuckle Whitefly 3 PSL ticks 😁. Sunshine brought out lots of raptors too Golden Eagle and Merlin the best #panspecieslisting

Today’s WBD seemed to catching plenty of food items this afternoon- mainly small flatfish by the looks of things. The Great Black-backed Gulls were very attentive - though I don’t think they were successful in stealing any prey. I was glad to see it feeding well given the situation #scottishbirds

Look at the size of that protist! The giant amoeba Pelomyxa palustris was today’s best sighting from a nearby pond sample. At first I feared that the little gastrotrich would be engulfed but that didn’t seem to be likely after watching for a while. Easily visible as 2mm across #protistsonsky

I’ve been struck down by this horrible cold that’s going round so I’ve contented myself with some microscopy - here are four testate amoeba I’ve identified: Alabasta militaris, Euglypha strigosa, Difflugia manicata, Quadrulella symmetrica any errors let me know #protistsonsky

This weekend has been all about the testate or shelled amoebas- if you want to see one I suggest a microscope and a drop of water from the bottom of a houseplant pot - they seem to like it there!

Found some Wart Barnacles (Verruca stroemia) washed up on a piece of net yesterday. All of the larger individuals had Foraminiferans on them, mostly Lobatula lobatula which commonly lives on other species apparently - happy to see them in situ #panspecieslisting

Found my first Gastrotrich today - not every day I get to see a new animal phylum 🎉 🥳 So that’s the 16th phylum here at Pease Bay in less than a year which isn’t bad #gastrotricha

A first for me today was this Hypotrich - a single-celled organism scampering around on ‘legs’ - far more animal-like than any other protozoan that I’ve seen #hypotrich

Lovely walk to Penicuik House Estate added a species I’ve definitely seen before (Maidenhair Spleenwort) and one that I’ve not noticed before (Broom Fork-moss). Also, though I’m not 💯 confident of either, Scaly Pelt Lichen and Black Witches’ Butter - happy to be corrected #panspecieslisting

The first day of the year and a couple of new species already on the list - both literally on the doorstep of my dune side retreat at Pease Bay: Sand-hill Screw-moss and Sand Couch-grass - both species I clearly stepped all over last year - a nice reminder to look closer and harder everywhere! #psl

Found my first y-larva (Facetotectan) yesterday- a mysterious and parasitic sister group to the barnacles. No-one has seen an adult and no-one yet knows their hosts… This is a naupilus stage and maybe a moulted exuvia #marineplankton

Christmas Day trip out on the paddleboard to collect some plankton at Pease Bay resulted in a whole series of lovely gifts 😁: a couple of foraminifera - Leptohalysis scottii and a species of rotaliida; an acantharian radiolarian; the silicoflagellate Dictyocha fibula #plankton

Only just noticed that my #BWPUC has been offline for a month - generally ignore it due to ID errors. It got the following correct though Whooper Swans (November) and Whimbrel (September). Highlight: a Sandwich Tern at night in September over Penicuik! #birdingScotland @lothianrecorder.bsky.social

@elizabethbeston.bsky.social I wonder if you’d be able to point me in the right direction in the identification of a variety of copepods - all from Inshore plankton trawls from a paddle board in southeast Scotland - no recent samples as the sea’s been a little rough - so I’m trawling pics instead!

My first check for the winter this morning and at least three of the usual Woodcock are in their usual spots - all viewable from the car and all drive-away views - this pic does not do the bird justice… #birdingScotland

Fairly wild seas at Pease Bay this morning- couldn’t pick out any Little Auks offshore but GnD, RtD, RbM and Common Scoters were nice. Best was a Water Pipit on the beach at the mouth of the Pease Dean Burn - it headed high and S before pics unfortunately #scottishbirding

Two highlights at Pease Bay yesterday both patch firsts for me: Cuckoo Ray - sadly dead - but not commonly reported at the shore otherwise as it is a deeper water species. Little Egret rockpooling with me 😁
