Judaculla’s Kids concluded their year with a visit to Judaculla Rock and downtown Sylva. Dr. Tom Belt shared teachings on caring for land and water. CCYC and the Cherokee Central Fly Fishing Club explored stream health through aquatic insects with guidance from EBCI NRD’s Water Quality Program. Students learned about water quality, pollution, and cultural connections to clean water. Sgi to all collaborators who made it possible!

Last week on the 21st, CNH staff and the Mother’s Council gathered at the Cherokee Mothers Garden, where Adam Griffith from EBCI NC Cooperative Extension helped harvest sunchokes (Jerusalem artichokes). He shared some for planting and prepared them three different ways for us to try. Sgi to Adam!

Last week, on April 20th, Judaculla’s Kids visited Devil’s Courthouse, where Judaculla once danced and held court. Students hiked to the summit, took in the views, and explored teachings about respect, balance, and caring for the land and water. #cherokeeyouth #judacullaskids

On April 17th, CCYC students took a field trip to sustainably harvest ramps, many for the first time. They learned to take only what’s needed and protect future growth. We’re honored to support this year’s recovery celebration on July 10th! This event brings the community together to uplift and support those affected by substance use and to remind us that recovery is possible. As they remind us, “It takes all of us to heal one of us.”

On April 7th, Judaculla’s Kids met with EBCI NRD’s Water Quality Program to learn how aquatic insects indicate stream health. Students collected river samples, used microscopes, and reflected by the water. Sgi to all who made this meaningful experience possible!

On April 1 we held our first Indigenous Logic Model cohort of 2026! Ameena Batada and returning cohort member Jakeli Swimmer introduced logic models and organizational concepts to new participants. CCYC students met for a hands-on day of planting and culture, learning about Cherokee gardening traditions and joining the Groundhog Dance with Coche Tiger. They built garden beds and planted pollinators and sochan. Sgi to CCS, Smokies Life, and EBCI NRD for making it possible.

On March 25, Judaculla’s Kids from NKA visited The Center for Native Health’s garden to help shape the Mother’s Garden. They learned from the Mother’s Council and Coche Tiger about reciprocity and caring for the land. This event was made possible by NKA, CNH, and CCS.

Yesterday we gathered for our February Mothers Gathering focused on infant massage. Meredith and Michelle from the EBCI NFP shared techniques and spoke about the importance of touch and connection. Holding, touching, and loving your baby is essential to healthy growth and development.

The January CCYC club meeting focused on the relationship between plants and pollinators. Students heard the Cherokee story The Origin of Disease and Medicine, told by Catcuce Tiger, learned about pollinators & planted seeds. This marks the beginning of plans for a future pollinator garden on campus

Judaculla’s Kids visited the NC Arboretum on January 28 after a club meeting on conservation and art. Students explored Thomas Dambo’s troll sculptures made from reclaimed materials, met educational live animals, and learned about conservation efforts. Sgi to the Arboretum staff and educators

We hosted a Mothers Gathering on January 20 focused on motherhood and mental health. Brooke Coggins Barrett shared tangible steps to help address mom guilt and offer support. We’re grateful for these moments of connection and hope you’ll join us at the next gathering!

CNH hosted a mini Writers Workshop with Unite for Literacy and the Cherokee Growing Readers Initiative. Staff and community learned about the book creation process. We are grateful to help create books that reflect Cherokee life, language, and culture and support this meaningful movement.

The January Judaculla’s Kids Club, themed “Conservation and Art,” was a big success! Students heard Cherokee stories from Matthew Tooni, learned from local artists, and created creatures from Cherokee stories using recycled materials. Creativity and teamwork filled the room!

We’re grateful to Dogwood Health Trust for funding our partnership with the EBCI to care for homebound elders. On Dec 18, 2025, volunteers delivered meals and gifts. This 2 year project also includes an Adopt an Elder program, and in home fall risk assessments. Sgi to all who shared their care
