Across the #EUROSTUDENT countries, 22% of students report discrimination experiences during their studies. On average, the most common grounds for discrimination, as perceived by the students themselves, are gender and age, with 8 and 6%, respectively.

While 🇳🇱 the Netherlands show a high proportion of students participating in research or field trips (24%), students in 🇪🇸 Spain, 🇨🇿 the Czech Republic, and 🇨🇭 Switzerland commonly go abroad for language courses (15, 11, and 10%, respectively).

Did you know that 🇫🇮 Finland and 🇸🇪 Sweden have some of the highest tuition fees (1488 & 423 PPS (Purchasing Power Standard) respectively) yet the fewest fee-paying students (≤3%)? Meanwhile 🇳🇱 the Netherlands, 🇵🇹 Portugal, 🇮🇸 Iceland & 🇨🇭 Switzerland have lower fees but much higher shares of fee-payers.

According to the E:8 data, students from 🇮🇸 Iceland report the highest mental well-being, whereas students in 🇵🇱 Poland report the lowest. 📚 On average, students with a high study intensity indicate a score which is slightly lower than students with a low study intensity

🇪🇪 Estonia and 🇳🇱 the Netherlands are the only EUROSTUDENT countries where satisfaction among part-time students is considerably ⬇️ below the average of all students.

Students from less well-off families are, on average, 2.6× more likely to work to afford studying than those from very well-off backgrounds. The gap is huge in some countries: 🇩🇪 Germany: 9.3× 🇷🇴 Romania: 5.8× 🇭🇷 Croatia: 5.2× 🇨🇿 The Czech Republic: 5.1×

Did you know that in all but 4 EUROSTUDENT countries, the share of students living with parents among those with low educational background is below the national average for all students❓

Students who study beyond the standard period of study: 🔹 have a lower sense of belonging 🔹 are less likely to rate their academic performance better than that of their fellow students 🔹 are more likely to consider dropping out than those still within the standard period of study.

Students’ self-earned income is the single most important source of income in 54% of the #EUROSTUDENT countries. This is true for the 🇨🇿 Czech Republic, 🇨🇭 Switzerland, 🇩🇪 Germany, 🇵🇱 Poland, 🇭🇺 Hungary, 🇮🇪 Ireland, 🇳🇱 the Netherlands, 🇲🇹 Malta, 🇪🇪 Estonia, 🇦🇹 Austria, 🇮🇸 Iceland, 🇫🇮 Finland & 🇳🇴 Norway.

🔹 At HEIs with few STEM programs, women make up 57%+ of students. 🔹 At STEM-heavy institutions, men are the majority in nearly every country — averaging 2/3 of the student body. The only exception is 🇸🇰 Slovakia.

Across EUROSTUDENT countries, 26% of students face an accommodation cost overburden. International students report it even more often than domestic ones. The burden is also heavier for those relying on public student support. Also, students w. financial difficulties are far more likely to struggle.

When looking at students' time budget, 🇱🇻 Latvian and 🇵🇱 Polish students top the charts, spending 54 hours/week on study & work — compared to just 41 hours in 🇫🇷 France. On average, part-time students clock 10 more hours weekly than full-timers, mostly due to working nearly 3× as much (32h vs 11h).

Older students = happier students? According to the EUROSTUDENT 8 data, students aged 30+ report the highest well-being scores (avg. 56 points) vs. 50 points for younger peers. Read more 👉 🔗 tinyurl.com/rdndxpak

Did you know that students in the fields of 🧑‍🏫 Education as well as 💼 Business, Administration & Law more often engage in part-time, distance, or online studies compared to those in other subject groups? Not surprisingly, 💻 ICT students especially stand out with high levels of online learning.

💸 🫰 Working students earn a median of 811 PPS/month (PPS: Purchasing Power Standard), but income varies widely across the countries — it's highest in 🇲🇹 Malta, lowest in 🇩🇰 Denmark. In most countries, male students earn more than female students: partly due to working about an hour more per week.

Young students and those relying on public support are more likely to live in student housing. Especially in the Netherlands, Slovakia & the Czech Republic, many students dependent on public support live in dorms. Students who regard themselves as ‘workers’ live in student accommodation less often.

Across all E:8 countries, 1/3 of students with 👶 have a youngest child under the age of 6. Most of the young children under 6 can be found in Denmark, Germany, Finland, Iceland, Austria & Switzerland and particularly in Azerbaijan & Georgia, where the share is more than 80%. 🧐 tinyurl.com/2zbred8z

🧑‍💼 ➡️ 🧑‍🎓 Did you know that in 🇮🇸 Iceland (62%), 🇩🇰 Denmark (52%), and 🇸🇪 Sweden (49%), many students arrive at university with serious work experience (1+ year, 20+ hrs/week)?

23% of all students report a (very) negative impact of the COVID-19 on the financing of their studies. The share ranges from a bit more than 10% in Lithuania to more than 33% in Portugal. Most students reported no or even positive impact, but remember that these results don't include dropouts.

Across Europe, students’ well-being drops as parental financial status declines. 🟢 “Very well-off” parents → avg. well-being score: 57 🔴 “Not at all well-off” → 42 This trend holds in nearly every EUROSTUDENT country. Read more: rb.gy/wpmwtq

EUROSTUDENT data shows that there's a great variance in the share of delayed transition students between different countries. The highest share of them can be found in Finland (34%), followed by Sweden & Iceland. The smallest shares of the group occur in France & Georgia. More 👉 tinyurl.com/4myj5xjx

Did you know that women are more likely than men to come from non-tertiary educated families in all EUROSTUDENT countries except 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan, 🇩🇪 Germany, 🇩🇰 Denmark, 🇮🇪 Ireland, and 🇲🇹 Malta? And that domestic students more often come from non-tertiary educated families than international students?

♿ On average, 21% of students in EUROSTUDENT countries indicate being at least somewhat limited by a disability in their daily life. At least a quarter of students indicate a disability limiting to daily life in 🇫🇮 Finland, 🇨🇿 the Czech Republic, 🇸🇪 Sweden, 🇮🇸 Iceland, and 🇩🇰 Denmark.

🎓✈️ Studying abroad? 64% of students get full credit for temporary enrolments — but internships lag at just 44%. Big gaps by country: 🇫🇮 Finland leads on internship credit (86%), while 🇭🇷 Croatia & 🇬🇪 Georgia lag behind (~20%); 🇭🇺 Hungary: only 40% full recognition for studies abroad

In EUROSTUDENT, Purchasing Power Standard (PPS) is used as a common aritificial currency. 1 PPS = same value basket in all EU-27 states, cutting out exchange rate & price level noise. Below, accommodation costs in PPS are shown by form of housing for students not living with their parents 👇

Students who perceive themselves to be 'workers' study less but hustle more: 📚 They spend just 69% of the study time that ‘student’-students do. ⏱️ But with jobs added, their total weekly workload (studying and working together) is 13% higher.

Study modes differ between different types of HEIs. 🎓 Non-unis lean into part-time & online learning. 🏫 Public HEIs lead in part-time, but lag in online formats. 💻 Fewer staff = more distance learning. 🏛️ More research = less flexible formats. 🖋️ Specialised HEIs = more online/part-time options.
