The availability of study resources such as computers, internet, desk, and a quiet place to study can depend on educational background. For example, in 🇭🇺 Hungary, 🇩🇰 Denmark, 🇮🇪 Ireland, 🇫🇷 France, 🇷🇴 Romania, and 🇬🇪 Georgia, the disparity in desk availability reaches or exceeds 10 percentage points.

It’s #GirlsinICT Day! 🥳👩‍💻 Today, we highlight how crucial it is to encourage more girls to choose ICT studies. 📊 EUROSTUDENT 8 data shows: on average, only 1 in 4 ICT students is a woman. There’s hope, though — in 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan, 🇬🇪 Georgia & 🇸🇪 Sweden, women already make up nearly half of ICT students.

Study abroad plans vary widely: students in Azerbaijan, Georgia & Portugal show high interest (12–13% actively planning; 1/3 to 1/2 of hitherto non-mobile students having general intentions). In contrast, in Finland & Lithuania students show low shares in both active planning and general intentions.

On EUROSTUDENT av., students studying completely/mostly online spend 30hrs/week on study-related activities. For students taught in person it is 35hrs. The gap comes mostly from time spent on taught studides. It's a trend in nearly every country - biggest gaps: Malta (14 hrs) and Portugal (11 hrs).

Did you know that while about half of students in 🇫🇮 Finland, 🇱🇻 Latvia, and 🇮🇸 Iceland predominantly or entirely attend their courses online, the proportion in 🇭🇷 Croatia, 🇫🇷 France, 🇨🇿 the Czech Republic, 🇩🇰 Denmark, 🇦🇹 Austria, and 🇵🇹 Portugal is less than 10%?

Why do students work? Across #EUROSTUDENT countries: 👉️ 70% say covering living costs is a key motive; 👉️ 69% want to afford extra things; 👉️ 59% work to gain labour market experience; 👉️ 48% to afford studying; 👉️ 26% to support others financially.

In most #EUROSTUDENT countries, the share of BA students living in student accommodation has decreased between E:V and E:8. In 37% of countries — incl. Sweden, Norway, Ireland, France, Denmark, Austria & Croatia — dorm use increased, though less strongly. Denmark saw the largest rise (+15 pp).

It's the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination! #EUROSTUDENT survey shows that 22% of students report experiencing discrimination during their studies, most often due to gender & age. On av., 2% have experienced discrimination based on their skin colour. #FightRacism

On cross-country average, 8% of students have interrupted their studies (officially or unofficially). Long interruptions (>2 years) are especially common in 🇬🇪 Georgia, 🇸🇪 Sweden, 🇮🇸 Iceland, 🇦🇿 Azerbaijan, 🇦🇹 Austria, and 🇵🇹 Portugal (≥20% of interrupters).

Students with disabilities face greater financial hardship. Across #EUROSTUDENT countries, 37% report (very) serious financial problems — above average in every country. Among students without disabilities, the cross-country average is 23%.

In the European Higher Education Area, most students come from tertiary-educated families: ▪️ 52% have at least one parent with a Bachelor’s, Master’s or Doctoral degree, and 7% with ISCED 5 (short-cycle) ▪️ 41% have no parent with tertiary education.

Who goes abroad still depends on family background. Across all types of international student mobility, students from non-academic households participate less than those from academic families. At the peak of study abroad (2012–2018): 6% vs 10%.

As expected, tuition fees look very different depending on the type of HEI. ▪️ Public HEIs: on average, 42% of students pay fees ▪️ Private HEIs: 87% pay fees The gap is especially large in 🇵🇱 Poland, 🇸🇰 Slovakia, 🇦🇹 Austria, 🇱🇹 Lithuania, 🇨🇿 The Czech Republic, and 🇪🇪 Estonia (≥60 pp).

Certain HEI types tend to be socially selected. For example, institutions with very high student–staff ratios tend to have more students from affluent, highly educated families than better-staffed HEIs.

Working during the lecture period leaves students with less time to focus on their studies. It is often students from not well-off families who have to work. In 🇲🇹Malta, over 85% of these students have paid jobs; in 🇨🇿the Czech Republic & 🇱🇻Latvia, it is around 80%.

The largest shares of students indicating that their 👩‍👩‍👧‍👦 family is not very or not at all well-off can be found in 🇷🇴 Romania, 🇮🇪 Ireland, 🇫🇷 France, 🇵🇹 Portugal, and 🇩🇪 Germany, where this is the case for at least a quarter of students.

Across the #EUROSTUDENT countries, 22% of students report discrimination experiences during their studies. On average, the most common grounds for discrimination, as perceived by the students themselves, are gender and age, with 8 and 6%, respectively.

While 🇳🇱 the Netherlands show a high proportion of students participating in research or field trips (24%), students in 🇪🇸 Spain, 🇨🇿 the Czech Republic, and 🇨🇭 Switzerland commonly go abroad for language courses (15, 11, and 10%, respectively).

Did you know that 🇫🇮 Finland and 🇸🇪 Sweden have some of the highest tuition fees (1488 & 423 PPS (Purchasing Power Standard) respectively) yet the fewest fee-paying students (≤3%)? Meanwhile 🇳🇱 the Netherlands, 🇵🇹 Portugal, 🇮🇸 Iceland & 🇨🇭 Switzerland have lower fees but much higher shares of fee-payers.

According to the E:8 data, students from 🇮🇸 Iceland report the highest mental well-being, whereas students in 🇵🇱 Poland report the lowest. 📚 On average, students with a high study intensity indicate a score which is slightly lower than students with a low study intensity

🇪🇪 Estonia and 🇳🇱 the Netherlands are the only EUROSTUDENT countries where satisfaction among part-time students is considerably ⬇️ below the average of all students.
