I'm always hearing about how "neglected" The North is. So how come Tower Hamlets, Hackney , and Islington are always boroughs topping the league table for child poverty?

I've never bonded with someone over football. Partly because I have no interest in sport and feel no emotional attachment to any team. Also because I hate the silly songs they sing and the revolting tribalism of it all. I don't even bond with people because we have enjoyed the same book or film.

11 years ago the Labour membership rejected the continuity Blairite candidate Andy Burnham in favour of Jeremy Corbyn. In 2020 Starmer told everyone on the left to fuck off so we did, and now vote Green. Now Burnham is being hailed as the authentic loveable northern lefty. Labour are a joke.

When Burnham loses Makerfield then Labour will have commited the extraordinary foot-shooting exercise and proved that they are not the answer to keeping Reform out of government. At that stage perhaps their supporters will see the light and start voting for progressive parties.

It's typical Labour arrogance to assume that the folk who an elected a Labour MP 2 years ago will flock to the polls to vote for a parachute candidate. If I lived in Makerfield I would not be amused by my vote being abused in this way for the sake of a political faction within Labour.

In politics when you try to engineer a result in the Machiavellian way that Burnham's supporters are doing things have a horrible way of going wrong. It's not at all obvious to be why the people of Markerfield should not be furious about being taken for granted and vote against him on principle.

Streeting campaigning on the Rejoin platform has suddenly backed Burnham into being the "make Brexit work" candidate. So we get another remainer PM with his version of Starmer's red lines and "closer ties" bollocks. Great.

If Reform beat Burnham Labour cultists will be a bit disappointed and rally around Streeting instead. But if the Greens win they will totally lose their shit. That tells you all you need to know about them.
