The Floating Hospital joined the Long Island City Walk & Talk tour on 1/24, organized by New Yorkers for Parks and the Play Fair Coalition. Elected officials, open space advocates, and LIC residents toured potential green space sites in what is currently one of the least green districts in NYC.

December’s Candy Cane Lane served more than 1,000 visitors—843 of them children—providing new coats, sneakers, winter clothing, pajamas, toys, games, books, and other gifts for the holidays. Some 4,700 items were received in all, making it a happier holiday for kids in need of some joy.

Our biggest news this year was our selection as one of 80 Action for Women’s Health awardees worldwide, but we felt seen in other ways as well, including Bank of America’s Neighborhood Builders Grant, news coverage and the many ways big and small that donors helped our patients in times of crisis.

When not fishing, swimming and zip-lining at Camp Rise Up, the teens attend classes designed to help them understand their emotional and physical development and to prepare them for advanced schooling and employment. Thanks to our donors, volunteers and staff for this incredible experience.

Beautiful weather is forecast for Camp Rise Up this week, and the kids were geared up and pumped up for their sleep-away adventure when they boarded the buses on Sunday and headed due north for five days of fun and learning. Thanks to our sponsors, donors and volunteers for making this possible.

Summertime is Story Time in the shelters we serve. Foundation Board Chair Joan Brancaccio is bringing books to adults and children in shelters such as Legacy and Help Morris. With staff and interns to help her, she sparks smiles in those who listen to her read and then keep the books.

On 8/6, our interns ended their program with presentations on their time with us. Drawn from our patients and community, they helped in several departments, learning skills valuable to potential employers. Thanks to the Times Square Olive Garden, which donated the lunch that was served afterward.

Gun violence causes anxiety, hypervigilance, sleep disturbances, depression, and difficulty engaging in life in the communities that we serve. Through Cure Violence grants sponsored by Councilwoman Julie Won, we help victims recover and prevent future gun violence. Read more in our newsletter.

With vaccines in the headlines, has NY State has altered its requirements for school attendance? As of now, the answer is no, but our clinical staff are seeing “a lot of fluidity surrounding vaccines right now,” with changes likely to come. Read the latest developments in our July newsletter.

Women’s Wellness had a pop-up event at our main clinic on July 24. The Italian-American Cancer Foundation Mammogram Bus was parked outside, and inside there were racks of pajamas and lingerie, gift bags of self care items and other goodies galore! Because everyday should be a Women’s Wellness Day!

Our staff had a chance to relax and team build at the annual Summer Picnic on 7/18. The clinic closed early so employees could head to Queensbridge Park, where they enjoyed games and a catered lunch. Everyone’s t-shirts had a logo by Martha Zambrano, winner of our first t-shirt design contest.

SOAR, our Spanish-language day camp is taking place in this week! Campers learn the first year of coursework from Camp Rise Up in the morning and take off for afternoon adventures, such as rock climbing, a Mets game, the beach and more. Once their English improves, they can join CRU for year 2.

Last week our summer interns had a career day chat with Floating Hospital President Sean Granahan, Foundation Board Chair Joan C. Brancaccio and several staff members, who described their own jobs and careers. We are also very grateful to Jersey Mike's Subs for providing the tasty boxed lunch.

We are thrilled to have partnered with the Maspeth Stop & Shop in its June Community Bag Program. Customers who purchased a special shopping bag contributed a total of $1,742 to The Floating Hospital. Since the program’s beginning, the corporation has given some $3.4 million to 7,603 nonprofits.

Our summer gala was a journey back to 1940s nightclubs and what those years—before, during, and after World War II—meant for our patients and our nation. Relive some of the highlights in a newsletter article that features some iconic photos of the period and the people and stories behind them.

Journey, a new day camp for kids 10-11, has begun! With five lessons and activities over three days, it will acclimate students to Camp Rise Up’s sleep-away structure and instruction. Workshops on self-esteem, puberty, bullying and more will precede afternoon adventures like the trapeze on July 2.

Measles cases are climbing as vaccinations decline. As of 5/29, the CDC confirmed 1,088 cases across 33 states with 133 patients requiring hospitalization and 3 deaths. “Vaccination isn’t just protection for the individual—it’s protection for the entire community,” said Dr. Seung Hee Kang.

On 5/31, the Healthcare Businesswomen’s Association in NY & NJ enjoyed Pickleball for Health Equity at Centercourt Sports in Chatham, NJ.
