#FoodOnFriday Green beans are happy to climb almost anything and I'm happy to eat them with almost anything. I collected these today and I'll slice them up & mix them with rice tonight. They make the rice taste green.

#RedWed Messages to visitors can be posted in red if they are very important. At Mitchell Lake Audubon Center, November 2023. Driving seems like it would be confusing and difficult there. I've never tried it, but walking is easy and fun.

#RedWed Pomegranates are red & ripe, beginning to fall from the trees. I find the fruit on the ground sometimes, too far to have rolled there. Some creature must have carried & dropped it. Maybe the fruit-moving creature is coming back, or maybe this is where more trees will sprout next year.

#BlueTue If this shiny little bead is what I think it is, found tonight after breaking away so long ago (and so far away in the house), I'm amazed to see it & a little sorry that it didn't stay hidden longer. An archaeologist might've liked finding it in about 1,000 years, wondering what it meant.

#BlueTue #AnimalArtTuesday I'll save the story about these blue glass birds except to say that I recently found the smaller one in a strange place and added it to the well-established pair, thinking they might all enjoy a little bigger family.

#AlphabetChallenge #WeekVforVowels E is for Elephant. This elephant bathtub came as a flowerpot; it was never good at that job. Then it got a better job, helping bees & small birds. Then it cracked in a freeze. Someone (I suspect a raccoon) scattered the pieces. I know where most of them are.

#GreenSat Reptiles and birds are the same. This is an evidence-based claim. Evidence: Asked to find "green parrot" in my collection, Google Photos returned this image of a green anole as Most Relevant. Studies have not ruled out the possibility that green lizards are caused by green parrots.

#FoodOnFriday Windows are the most amazing thing at airports, as fun now as they were when I was a kid, watching while waiting. Anything might be happening out there, maybe coming in for a landing any second now, keep watching. Sky Harbor, Phoenix AZ.

#RedWed Plants find their own ways of handling November. Malvaviscus leaves (here green & broad) stay green in shade until a freeze zaps them brown; if unfrozen, green all winter. Above them, tree leaves turn bright colors and drop as the days shorten, building a blanket for roots to sleep under.

#WallsOnWednesday Waterwall is in Houston TX. Houston is much too much for me so I'm glad not to have to go there this week after all. When I thought I might make the trip, I thought about standing by Waterwall again, eyes closed, crashing water, green grass. I'm a little sorry to miss that.

#BlueTue #AnimalArtTuesday This golondrina, swallow, is painted on a turkey feather. The swallows I see around here some evenings seem more black than blue, but maybe that's just because they're moving above me in half-darkness, not posing in bright light for portraits. From Cozumel, 2014.

#GreenSat The clear pieces of glass are not flat. White lines on the green wall show the beveled structure of the glass. I like seeing the lines, so this is pinned to the wall instead of catching more light in a window.

Sometimes I wish the bears racing across my roof, chasing each other, would go away or at least go to sleep. Logic says they cannot be bears. Bears don't run on rooftops. Bears haven't been seen around here for decades. Some many-footed big insomniac creatures are up there, fast-moving & noisy.

Sometimes I wish I lived in the cool mysterious North, where wild colors dance in the night sky. Here, the night sky is dark & starry, with starlight colors subtle to the unaided eye. Daylight holds the strong colors, so I hang bits of glass & crystal in windows to fool it into coming indoors.

#RedWed Noticing something once makes it easier to notice it again. The blue sunshine in my garden wears bright red lipstick; I had forgotten.

#river It isn't that I've lived so much in dry country that running water seems a dangerous thing, likely to jump up suddenly and wash everything away. Living water sings a pretty song in cool shade. I like water just fine, tho I've seen the damage. I just didn't want to get my boots wet.

#YellowThu That's probably a nesting box for bluebirds, just taller than the tall grass above the trail where I was walking. I didn't climb up to see.

#YellowThu Argemone, bluestem prickly poppy. The leaves are tough and taste bad so the big animals leave it alone, giving the flowers time to develop oily seeds that feed small birds such as quail. Near Cibolo Creek, Boerne TX.

#YellowThu Deer are walking quietly in the tall grass nearby. Sometimes I see clear detail--a bright eye, an always-moving ear--but almost always behind some obstacle: thorny brush, tall grass, sometimes fog. Watching and watched. This is how deer walk in my dreams.

#RedWed Dogwood berries are white. White berries are less sugary than red ones, so critters tend to save them to eat later, after all their favorite stuff runs out. I saw plenty of red berries while out walking today, November 5; these white berries will probably be around for a while.

Sometimes I wish I lived on a little farm.

#MinimalMonday The view of a dark room reflected in a mirror can be brighter than the room itself.

#Fear Nothing is there in the dark that isn't there in the light. Probably. Still, replacing the broken fixture outside this door was a good accomplishment today.

#GreenSat In certain light, this dusty green glass bottle casts a dusty green glass shadow on the white wall behind it. Someday I'll finish painting that white wall blue, and then I don't expect to see the green shadow again. I do expect to remember it sometimes, in certain light.

#YellowThu Leaving the li_rary today, I found this _ig yellow letter B _eside the _ack tire of my little red truck. May_e it fell out of someone's alpha_et set. I hope it won't _e a pro_lem for them later.

#YellowThu This is not a new photo but I laugh every time I come across it. I remember being in a greenhouse, looking up at yellow leaves fallen on the roof. Google Photos says this is a match for "fish". Strange things do happen but I still think I'm right. You can believe what you wish.

#RedWed Big winds caused a Red Flag warning today and broke a few branches. I brought this broken hunk of coleus indoors to the plant hospital so it could rest in a glass of water and think about growing roots.

#AnimalArtTuesday I tried a new snack. It was not made of animals but I see 2 on the wrapper: 1 big bear (wearing a fig leaf, so not bare) and 1 tiny butterfly. Inside, a stick insect surprise card looks like it'll be part of a set. The snack was good, so I'll eat more and look for other surprises.

#AnimalArtTuesday Medina Electric Co-op gives away bottles of water with these super-cool labels drawn by a brilliant young local artist. The label is a view through a porthole into blue water. Colorful creatures swim in the water, with actual water behind them.

#TrainsOnTuesday In Alpine TX, a wall of the train station shows and tells things to know about the town and the area. It was a long stop so I could've gotten out to get a better look. Too early in the morning, though, so I took this shot from the train window and went back to sleep.

#OrangeSun Many of my outdoor flowerpots are orange terracotta. Some are painted, sometimes with orange accents. When terracotta pots crack, they move indoors to live with me, protected from the worst of the weather. Cracked pots and I get along well; we understand each other.

"Be extra careful, the dog here could hurt you." That's the usual Beware-of-Dog warning. "Be extra careful, you could hurt the dog here." This one's unusual, surprising, but fair enough: risk can go both ways.

#FoodOnFriday Orange carrots waited in the red bowl until they were juiced; carrot juice in the clear glass makes the glass look orange. Because English is amazing, the carrot juice is orange but it is not called orange juice. Juice made from oranges would look orange and be called orange juice.

This is Mascagnia macroptera, called Butterfly Vine for the shapes its seed pods will make later. Today, just watered on a hot, sunny afternoon, it makes a strong shadow on the white wall its trying to climb. The plant is green and yellow; the shadow is all black.
