On this day in 2013 "Funky" Claude Nobs passed away. Nobs was the founder of the Montreux Jazz Festival. He was a music legend, referenced in Deep Purple's most enduring song, as well as a hero who saved many from harm during the 1971 casino fire. R.I.P., Claude.

On this day in 1961 David Rosenthal was born. Rosenthal was a member of Rainbow from 1981 through 1984 playing on both "Straight Between The Eyes" and "Bent Out Of Shape." He went on to perform with many artists including Whitesnake before landing in Billy Joel's band in 1993.

On this day in 1968 Deep Purple played their last in a run of shows at The Electric Circus in New York. The shows started on Christmas Eve and went through the New Year.
