Conioselinum pacificum (Pacific hemlock-parsley) is a carrot-family native to sow in a sunny spot while we still have a few months of winter ahead of us. It looks fairly similar to invasive Queen Anne's lace, and don't let the name fool ya; the roots are a traditional food in our region.

When folks talk about sedges around here, they’re usually referring to species within the genus Carex. It makes sense; more than two thirds of the species in Cyperaceae (the sedge family) are members of that genus (sometimes called “true sedges”), and many of the other species are commonly . . .

A surprising non-native that is often seen grown for ecologically-minded plantings is Plantago lanceolata (narrow-leaf plantain). The reason for this is that Plantago is the primary host for the endangered Euphydryas editha ssp. taylori (Taylor’s checkerspot butterfly).
