It's the time of year to delight in the marks left behind by the insects and other critters that have been chewing on the native plants that are the bedrock of vibrant ecologies. I will never stop loving the squiggly paths made by leaf miners as they grow.

The big fall fundraiser sale at Heronswood Garden is tomorrow, and I’ve rearranged my day a bit so that final packing of plant orders will be my last step; I have a good deal of shipping and plant ID to do first so I can take orders up to 6pm.

I've added a new feature to my very detailed online inventory spreadsheet, which already includes details such as size/form, floral traits, growing conditions, ethnobotanical uses, and more. You can now quickly and easily cross-reference to see how the species is pollinated.

Day 2 of seed ID, and the 20% Labor Day sale continues. On the table is Eucephalus engelmannii (Engelmann's aster), a lovely purple one widespread in the Cascades, Rockies, and BC Coast Mountains. I have a couple of those available currently in the nursery.

Hey, you know what? I’m gonna do a Labor Day sale. Nobody’s stopping me. Fall’s just a few weeks away, and the autumn is prime planting time in our region.

A delightful native that is hard to find for sale is Comarum palustre (marsh cinquefoil), which I added back into the inventory this morning. These are among my favorite blossoms in the rose family, a deep maroon that makes it look like a wild strawberry that got a little squished onto the sepals.

A couple days ago I posted about Plantago maritima (sea plantain), a species that on the coast can be mistaken in passing for Triglochin maritima (sea-side arrow-grass). This morning I’m adding a smaller cousin to Triglochin maritima, Triglochin striata (three-ribbed arrow-grass).

I've added another Angelica to the inventory this morning. With the typical white umbel of flowers typical of the carrot family, Angelica canbyi tends to occur at higher elevations than the similar Angelica arguta (Lyall’s angelica), both in the Cascades and a bit in the Olympics.

Everybody loves a shooting star, so this morning a new addition to the nursery is Primula jeffreyi (Jeffrey’s shooting-star, aka Dodecatheon jeffreyi). This odd flower has an uncanny resemblance to nightshades like tomatoes, and for one very specific reason: native bees. These are . . .

I keep forgetting to post about Gamochaeta ustulata (purple cudweed, featherweed). Like other cudweeds (including Antennaria and Anaphalis, pussy-toes and pearly-everlasting), the whole plant is covered in a fine white fuzz that can be visually striking.

Do you love a challenge as much as you love rhododendrons? I have a small number of Rhododendron albiflorum (white rhododendron) available here in the nursery, a species that has a reputation for being finicky in cultivation.
