I think the notion that culture has stopped meaningfully iterating comes purely from the perspective of people who have decided that history ends with them. It's easy to believe that nothing has changed in the past 20 years if you consistently regard anything that has changed as illegitimate.

I've heard a lot of people say modern fantasy aesthetics are uninspired, but I don't really feel like this is the case. If anything, they're overly fantastical to the point where the incessant worldbuilderness fails to provide a grounded reference point and it all comes off as meaningless gibberish

Thing that gets me about all this nostalgia bait stuff is like... you can still go buy a CRT or a digicam or build a website or chat on IRC, and none of those are difficult or expensive, none of that disappeared, you just stopped doing it and continue to to not do it while waxing nostalgic about it.

I think the term "ludonarrative dissonance" got unfairly clowned on, because to disregard it is to admit that the gameplay and story are entirely separate, unconnected things in what is supposed to be "an art"
