1,321. 2018 TOPPS HIGH TEK #HT-JCA I always love to see that green alt jersey from Jose’s second stint in Oakland. As with other Tek sets, there are a billion versions of every card, but this sort of wavy circuitboard background is my one and only, so far. 1/2

1,320. 2018 TOPPS FIRE #177 This is a lovely work of art, isn’t it? I love the abstract “hellfire” red, black and orange on the left, juxtaposed with the icy blues and whites on the right. And then you have Jose crushing one into the unknown. 🖼️ 1/2

2018 TOPPS 35TH ANNIVERSARY ALL-STARS BLACK #83-AS-59 This serial numbered /299 insert joins the base version in my collection. Jose has relatively chill hair here, not too mulletty, and he’s got a real skeptical expression. Like, “Are you effin with me, Rickey?” 1/2

1,318. 2018 TOPPS SALUTE #TS-45 Wow, there’s a lot to take in here that you don’t see every day on a Canseco card: the tongue, the five o’clock shadow, the strange green pillows on his arm instead of real armor. We get a good look at that 30th anniversary patch, too. Nice! 1/2

1,317. 2000 TOPPS TEK #11-10 Here’s the last new variation of these for now: the “position” variation. Not sure what position he played with the Rays? There it is a couple dozen times. Being card 10 of 20, this one has a different pic than 2 & 3 we saw earlier this week. 1/2

1,316. 2000 TOPPS TEK #11-3 Here’s yesterday’s card’s twin, with the American League background. Or should I say “quintuplet?” Every 5 cards (i.e. 11-1 through 11-5, etc.) used the same pic. So 11-6 through 11-10 had a different pic, all the way up to 11-20. Wild. 1/2

1,315. 2000 TOPPS TEK #11-2 During my recent “rainbow” series, I showed a few of the 20 variations of this card, and I recently added a few more. Each has a different background and here we have the “Players Choice” background. This is a truly crazy set. 1/2

1,314. 1998 SPX FINITE RADIANCE #328 Another day, another cool new horizontal Jays card from 1998! Nice big follow-through on the right, with a bat boy and security/cop cameo. Radiance was a parallel “limited” to 4,500 copies in the “commons” subset. 1/2

1,313. 1998 PACIFIC OMEGA RED #244 I always loved the base version, but this parallel looks really nice with that red foil! Crazy that that same Jays logo appears 5 times on the front of this card. Also, please excuse the dog hair. I try to avoid it but it’s everywhere. 1/2

1,312. 1993 PANINI STICKERS #85 Is this pic post warmup swing or did they do Jose dirty and use a post strikeout or pop-up pic? He doesn’t look too pleased, so I think it might have been after a big whiff. How dare you, Panini? 1/2

1,311. 1992 UPPER DECK GOLD HOLOGRAM #640 There really aren’t enough cards with Rickey and Jose together. This is probably the most iconic. They look so casual, like they’re discussing breakfast. Anyway, I’m happy to finally have this factory set “gold hologram” version. 1/2

1,310. 2026 DONRUSS BOMB SQUAD #20 Here we are in July and I’m finally welcoming my first 2026 card. Took a while, but it’s a fun little insert, bursting with color. And Panini did a good job of using a photo with little to no logo/wordmark, so there’s minimal photoshopping. 1/2

1,309. 1990 BASEBALLS FINEST STARS It’s always fun to see Jose sporting the old yellow jersey, and boy is this a fresh, crisp new one. This oddball card caught Jose in what appears to be a moment of genuine peace and contentment, which I hope he feels today on his birthday. 1/2

Happy big 6-2 to Jose (and Ozzie) Canseco! Blow out those candles!

1,308. 1990 STAR PROMO (PURPLE) Shhh. Be very quiet. This sleepy looking Jose is about to nod off. Even though in person this border looks quite blue, and not close to the shade of purple of the regular set, this is a purple promo. Go figure. Maybe the colorist was sleepy. 1/2

1,307. 1990 STAR PROMO (GREEN) I think this is a 1990 card because it has the italic word mark Star used that year. But I can’t find it on TCDB.com. The photo is fun because it’s slightly askew, like a ‘60s Batman camera angle. KAPOW! 1/2

1,306. 1989 ST. VINCENT BASEBALL PLAYERS STAMPS As far as I understand, this is a real 30 cent stamp from St. Vincent, an island in the Caribbean north of Venezuela. There were 81 stamps in the set, featuring current and former players, plus late commissioner Bart Giamatti. 1/2

1,305. 1989 PANINI STICKERS #477 First, this is a belated entry in my “Let ‘Er Rip” series, thanks to the torn v-neck. But this is an unusual sticker for two reasons: it’s horizontal and it’s staged, with Jose staring right at the camera, as opposed to a candid game shot. 1/2

1,304. 1989 BOWMAN TIFFANY #201 This was a long time coming! I remember first seeing ‘89 Bowman on a summer trip to Florida that year and I’m sure the card in my collection is from that trip. A mere 37 years later, I’ve finally landed its shiny twin! 1/2

Love this idea! As a kid I loved discovering cards of ballplayers like Mike Tyson and Mike Jackson.

1,303. 1988 FLEER CLASSIC MINIATURES #45 I’ve always enjoyed the red, white and blue of 1988 Fleer, so it’s fun to see it in mini form. This isn’t strictly speaking a mini parallel, because it’s a different photo. Looks like Jose’s in Boston, based on a couple of fans’ caps. 1/2

1,302. 2017 TOPPS TIER ONE AUTOGRAPHED RELICS #AT1R-JC Of the 3 dozen or so new cards I recently landed, this is by far the coolest! It’s actually my first autographed relic! Yes, it’s a sticker auto, but still. It’s pretty gorgeous, right? 1/2

🥸SPOT THE ‘STACHE #12🥸 This hairy series ends today at a cool dozen, with this bat relic card from 2002. They would’ve made it a facial hair relic, but they couldn’t get enough thin wisps of hair to make them visible to the naked eye.

🥸SPOT THE ‘STACHE #11🥸 Look familiar? Just a year after Topps used this pic for the 206 set, they dug it out again for Chrome Platinum Anniversary. But I love this blue sparkle so I had to show it again. Oddly, though, the ‘stache isn’t as prominent here.

🥸SPOT THE ‘STACHE #10🥸 Topps went retro in 2020 for both the 206 design and the olde-timey “colorized” photo of Jose, probably from ‘85 or early ‘86. The ‘stache is about as prominent as it gets for Jose. How would you rate it on a scale from 0 to Rollie Fingers?

1,301. 1991 PANINI TOP 15 STICKERS #24 It took a while, but I finally have all 3 of Jose’s stickers from this Canadian set of card-sized stickers. Right up front it tells you Jose ranked 4th in the AL in RBIs, with 101 in 1990. 1/2

1,300. 1996 TOPPS LASER POWERCUTS #P11 Not a super expensive card or anything, but I’m happy to have this one celebrate No. 1,300! Laser is one of my ‘90s favs and I’d never seen this insert until it popped up on eBay. It’s a shiny, die-cut beauty! 1/2

1,299. 2016 BOWMAN’S BEST 1996 ATOMIC REFRACTOR #96BB-JC Gotta be honest. When I bid on this card I thought it was the actual 1996 card. Totally my fault, it was labeled correctly. I think “1996 Atomic Refractor” got me excited. But happy with the card and the price I paid. 1/2

🇨🇦 CAN/AM CARDS — 1994 🇺🇸 This is it: OPC’s last independent release, with a fresh logo and dare I say a better design than Topps. OPC would be bought by Upper Deck and while they continue to make hockey sets under the brand, they’d come back to baseball just once more in ‘09.

🇨🇦 CAN/AM CARDS — 1993 🇺🇸 Can you feel it? It’s the swift breeze of the winds of change. OPC’s contract with Topps expired, so in 93 the Canadian counterpart went their separate ways with a completely different (and sadly lame) design. Also, that OPC is my most off-center card.

🇨🇦 CAN/AM CARDS — 1992 🇺🇸 I’m cheating a little bit here. That McDonald’s card isn’t really a “Canadian version” of the Donruss card. But it does use the same design on a card distributed in Canada. Meanwhile, O-Pee-Chee brought their logo back after two years of using Topps.

🇨🇦 CAN/AM CARDS — 1991 🇺🇸 1991 was year 2 of the fronts of O-Pee-Chee cards being indistinguishable from their Topps cousins, using the Topps logo. The backs remained distinct with French text and a brighter cardboard stock.

🇨🇦 CAN/AM CARDS — 1990 🇺🇸 With the new decade came some curveballs in the Can/Am connection. Fleer got in the game for this one year, but the only difference is it says “Ptd in Canada” on the back. No French. And OPC kept the Topps logo on the front with French on the back.

🇨🇦 CAN/AM CARDS — 1989 🇺🇸 In 1989 suddenly this Canadian boy could get real actual Donruss cards at the corner store! No more Leaf. OPC kept things going for a few years, though. Weird thing is, the photo is so similar to 1988. He’s just looking the opposite direction.

🇨🇦 CAN/AM CARDS — 1988 🇺🇸 The year of 40/40 brought us just one Can/Am parallel in each set. While OPC/Topps gave us a pretty iconic photo, shot from below so Jose looks majestic, Leaf/Donruss gave us a really odd look. His helmet/cap combo looks like a huge bubble on his head.

🇨🇦 CAN/AM CARDS — 1987 🇺🇸 American friends, our countries’ relationship has been a little rocky of late. But we’ve always been a good pair. Similar but different, much like Leaf/Donruss and O-Pee-Chee/Topps. So I’m launching this series with Jose’s first Can/Am cards, from ‘87.

1,298. 2024 LEAF VIVID CRYSTAL PURPLE #37 Honestly, modern Leaf hurts my brain. They just produce too many cards within too many sub-brands. Like Vivid. But this numbered /2 card caught my eye and I snagged it for cheap at auction. So now it gets to sparkle in my binder. 1/2

🌈OG RAINBOWS🌈 #36 Sadly this is the last of the OG rainbows, but a beauty to go out on. As a Canadian Canseco fan it’s a big goal to complete this rainbow, adding to the Base, Gold and Chrome. I need 4 more but they tend to be prohibitively pricey, especially with US shipping.
