How to ID the pups: Cedar has more silver guard hairs on his back and face and a narrower muzzle, while Rowan has a broader muzzle and fewer silver hairs. Personality traits: Rowan is laid-back and more dominant, whereas Cedar tends to be anxious in new situations. Pups are 22 lbs. at 2months old.

Wolves are opportunistic carnivores, primarily eating meat based on location and season. In the Arctic, they hunt caribou and musk oxen in winter and snowshoe hare in summer. In Minnesota, they mainly eat whitetail deer and moose in winter, and beaver and snowshoe hare in summer.

Whelping season is approaching, and preparation is crucial. A key part of this is denning. Wolves need specific den requirements to ensure a safe space for their pups. To provide a secure environment for the pups, it's important to select locations that are distant from neighboring packs and humans.

Various animals have unique grooming behaviors for cleanliness. Wolves nibble at their fur to remove debris, lick specific areas, and wipe their faces on the ground or in snow. Mutual grooming strengthens social bonds within the pack, which is crucial for these social carnivores.

As spring unfolds, warmer days are melting the winter ice and snow in the exhibit. The ground remains frozen, so the pond drain is inactive, creating some enrichment for our wolves. Excellent opportunities to observe wolf behavior can be viewed on our cams found on explore.org and Wolf.org.

Wolves can be hard to identify in the wild due to their similarity to other Canids. At the Center, we've captured trail cam footage of wolves, coyotes, and foxes, highlighting their unique features.
