Welch’s Double Dare Sour Ice Pops (1999-2000): A line of sour, fruit-flavored ice pops on a stick that featured a second sour flavored fruit filling inside. Available in classic "double sours" or the more intense "mega sours". There was even a rad mascot named "Sour Mander"!

Buffalo Bee Wheat/Rice Honeys 1954-1965 After Nabisco rebranded Ranger Joe Wheat Honnies, a new sheriff came to town in the form of a cowbee voiced by Mae Questel – one of the few cereal mascots to fire a gun. He also appeared in three Dell Four Color comics before being replaced by Buddy Bee.

Hugo Eircell 1997-2001 A cute cell phone named Hugo, dubbed "Ireland's Number One Action Hero", represented the country's first prepaid mobile service, Ready to Go - named after the song by Republica. He was given the inevitable CG makeover in 2000 and retired when Eircell was absorbed by Vodafone.

Which mascots, no matter what you may think of them, leave you surprised that they haven’t been retired? I’ll name a few:

Sugicchi Akita Prefecture 2006-2017 Sugicchi enjoyed a decade as Akita Prefecture's official mascot and chief of PR in Japan after winning a decisive battle against competing yura-kyaras in 2006. When the Akita government's license to the character expired, he was replaced by Ahman the Akita Inu.

Chipmunk Chipmunk Crisps 1962-1988 Chipmunk Crisps were regarded for their unique size, OXO flavour and cellophane packaging; a first for crisps in the UK. The mascot was promoted as the Only Talking Chipmunk in the World; evidence of his TV ad can currently only be found on a promotional vinyl.

I don’t recall seeing MR PIBB in a McDonald’s fountain before, but I DEFINITELY don’t recall seeing Mr Pibb-branded wax cups, and that’s a real shame. (1994)

Sonny Stuart's Drive Inns 1956 Although real people does not usually count here, an exception must be made for this cursed image. Sonny Stuart put his face on a small boy to sell the double-decker 'Dilly Burger' at his Houston-based Drive-Inns. A great example of how not to market your restaurant.

Wonka Dina-Sour Eggs (circa 1982-circa 1994): Sour, egg-shaped jawbreaker candies with a dinosaur theme. Each candy contained up to 4 different "layers" of flavor, and were said to last in your mouth for 30-60 minutes. Initially a "giant"-sized jawbreaker, they gradually shrunk as the 80's went on

Katie OXO 1958-1975 Over 17 years, OXO's 'Life with Katie' followed the flirty, busy dynamic between OXO cook Katie (Mary Holland) and her difficult husband Philip (Richard Clarke). The ads grew more down-to-earth as the two raised a son and moved to America, setting the tone for OXO's next family.

Mr. Delicious Rax Roast Beef 1992 To save their chain and distinguish themselves from clean, dishonest fast food, Rax created Mr. D, a self-aware, self-loathing middle-aged spokestoon. He remarked on personal matters like his lack of pay, his marital problems or his vasectomy. He almost killed Rax.
