Hundreds turned out on a very muggy evening here in Washington to protest the Trump administration while honoring the legacy of the late John Lewis, who passed away five years ago to the day.

A growing crowd has gathered outside the State Department this evening to show support for employees affected by today’s mass layoffs. Hugs and applause greet departing staff as they leave the building for the final time.

Downtown Bethesda, Maryland, packed with people who’ve turned out to the #NoKings protest here — one of the nearest to DC.

One obvious sign there’s a big protest on the horizon: Reinforced fencing is going up around the White House again.

Student activists with the Sunrise Movement, teachers, and union leaders rallied in support of public schools at the Department of Education tonight after this week’s mass layoffs. A chant: “Fully fund our schools now!” A sign: “Robbing our children to pay off billionaires.”

DC’s Black Lives Matter Plaza is being pulled apart. Crews started work to dismantle it today, almost five years after this space served as a rallying point for the Floyd protests.

Supporters of Ukraine just unfurled the world’s biggest 🇺🇦 flag on the White House ellipse calling for the U.S. not to abandon the country in its efforts to resist the Russian attack.

At the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda this morning. Packed with people protesting the Trump administration’s drastic cuts to the federal science workforce and research grants. “Save our science, save NIH,” they chant.

See all those people at the Lincoln Memorial? That’s the Stand Up for Science rally, from my view at the base of the Washington Monument.

Near the White House, at Black Lives Matter Plaza. Protesters held a vigil for democracy around the time Trump’s address to Congress began. “For all of those out there somehow still shocked by what is happening right now, Maya Angelou told us when someone shows you who they are, believe them.”

DC is a labyrinth of roadblocks tonight, but the Ukrainian community has still found a space to rally in support of Ukraine and Zelenskyy ahead of Trump’s speech: “Protect Ukraine, protect the world!”

USAID staff have two days to clean out their offices at the agency’s former headquarters in DC. People are gathering on the sidewalk in the rain to show their support, applauding workers as they pass by.

The Ukrainian community is rallying at the Lincoln Memorial marking three years since Russia launched its full-scale invasion. Speakers have already pushed back against Trump’s views of Zelenskyy, asserting that the real dictator “lives in Moscow.”

Protests are taking place all over the country tonight against cuts to vital federal services. Here in Washington, people are marching to SpaceX’s offices demanding Musk be ousted from the government.

Big, growing crowd just west of the U.S. Capitol protesting Trump, Musk and DOGE on President’s Day. “Hey Congress, grow a spine,” they shout, gathering for a rally around the reflecting pool.

Protesters are outside the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) after the Trump admin brought the agency to a halt. Most of the offices above us are dark. Rep. Pressley is at the mic — “THIS is what we're gonna dismantle? What in the hell kind of government efficiency is that?”

I heard chanting — “down with DOGE!” — coming from the Treasury again tonight, and ran into a group of protesters who’d marched in after an earlier rally at the Labor Department.

The Treasury Department right now. People are turning out against Musk and DOGE staging a takeover of the Treasury’s payment system. This crowd is big. The whole block is packed. “Lock him up,” everyone yells.

The sweeping suspension of federal grant money sparked a protest outside the White House this evening. Within earshot of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building while people were leaving work for the day: “No kings! No kings!”

Washington sees its first protest march of the second Trump era: Anti-war activists and immigration advocates set out in the frigid wind down 16th Street, moments after the oath of office was administered.

Back in town on inauguration day. It’s freezing but at least the sun is out. Vibes are quiet in the Dupont area well away from the security perimeter, but there are noticeably more helicopters than usual — and for D.C. that’s saying a lot.

I've been through three inaugurations since I moved to D.C. in 2012. Felt nostalgic so I dug back through my archives. This was Black Lives Matter Plaza celebrating while Biden took the oath four years ago, downtown still locked up like a fortress with Jan. 6 fresh in memory.

First impressions of this app are good! Easy to tell why people compare it to early Twitter. Feels like a better fit for the work I do than Threads. Has a ways to go for multimedia (needs longer video & 1080/60 upload) but I also recognize that takes time to build out. It’s got promise!

Meanwhile, on the White House ellipse …

The People’s March is moving through the streets of Washington: “We won’t go back!” A broad coalition of activists — among them climate, women’s rights, immigration, anti-war, LGBT, D.C. statehood, racial justice — are mobilizing in unison against Trump, three days before his inauguration. 🧵

Been waiting for a chance to give this app a spin and everything happening in downtown D.C. this weekend is as good an opportunity as any. I’m commuting in for the People’s March. Will post more once it gets underway.
