critical kate's metroidvania video is great but the definitional appeal to (sub)genre is something i think about differently. i believe there is a more generalized formal structure beneath metroidvania & platform adventure games that i call "maze worlds" (not the most beautiful term, i know).

something i've been thinking abt ever since reading phantom's cave story piece is that indie wasn't really a synonym for independent i.e. a mode of production, but a more nebulous artistic movement structured around a small number of communities and outlets.

just read thru eben holmes' article "strange reality". kind of remarkable to show up in 2010, write extensively on something that had not really been published on, then completely disappear from academia. aspirational tbh.

some (presumably) young kid just tuned into the abney stream and was like "why do you play the old mario kart when there's a new version" and "old games are weird because now they patch out bugs so you can't cheat"

just had my fastest run ever out of temple, a 17 flat, followed by 8 lake skip fails and a bad reflection. lost a whole minute and killed the run.

at one point i wanted to make guitar pedals and i'm glad i didn't pursue that because the industry is full of weirdos

ig reel with uncharted 4 gameplay saying its better than gta, as if a naughty dog game is some sort of hidden gem

i had an old prototype that was basically snake + pokemon-style type matchups that didn't really work gameplay-wise. was trying to imagine how i could retool it into a 3D action game and realized i just reinvented pikmin.

was messing around with a prototype in godot a few weeks ago and idk. i think getting MS3 across the finish line might be the end of my gamedev journey.

been posting too much today, but i just wanna say that i think the pachinko level from sms is fun. it's not Good but it's like a fun idea. I'm glad it's in the game. sandbird is cool too, i never got the hate on that one. there's no other mario level that gives me the same sense of vertigo.

i might be on my own on this but i find botw's UI sound design really annoying. its like robotic bird chirping. maybe i'm just projecting via bad sense memories but it really stood out to me when i was watching break the game.
