Narrative expansions trialed in the uneven 2004 film really come to life here. Can't wait to see it again.

I am 13th Floored to report that LA Haunted Hay Ride stepped it up this year. Our expectations were basically zero after a disastrous run a few seasons ago, but we were pleasantly surprised. The nickel and diming is still atrocious and leaves a bad taste in the mouth, but there's good stuff here.

Between a one free general admission ticket and a 50%-off-any-ticket coupon -- both from Midsummer Scream -- I paid $33 for two tickets to the LA Haunted Hayride this evening. Reader, I was prompted to spend more money for perks and add-ons *five times* before I was permitted to actually check out.

I was initially baffled why they chose to delay this again when the series has been screened for press with the review embargo lifted... ...and then I realized Stardust Racers is probably prominently featured.

Pretty stunned they went ahead with this. I know it's EOQ, but... like... read the room? Maybe?

How I'm feeling these days

It doesn't feel good to rip on a haunt that's delivered quite a few excellent, boundary-pushing shows, but people deserve to know what they're getting with this year's DELUSION. Start to finish, the actual show is 25 minutes long. Historically, their shows are about 65 minutes or so.

Revisited XANADU on Kino Lorber's fabulous new 4K disc release. The film itself is a mixed bag, but it also gifts us several bold, bonkers, and transcendent musical sequences that have never looked or sounded better. Gene Kelly's metatextual final film performance is a wonder and fitting sendoff.

Animatronic penguins and... Scooter, at least. Screens for everyone else, at least in the preshow. Better than what I expected!

Having just muscled my way through the GEX trilogy rerelease, this is, unfortunately, spot on. It was a fascinating time capsule, to be sure, but fighting a broken camera, slippery controls, and aggravating game design -- prominent features of many N64 titles -- is not especially fun.

The more I see and hear about Horror Unleashed, the more I'm getting the sense Universal played it pretty safe, for better or worse. Enthusiasts were hoping for a more elaborate and daring installation given the facility's relative permanence. They ultimately just built some solid Orlando houses.

Finally catching up on FALLOUT. The games always felt kind of impenetrable to me every time I tried them, but this show is so much fun. Bursting with personality, delighted to mine the lore, packed with strong performances.

Rewatching some of the FRIDAY THE 13TH flicks to get ready for the Horror Nights haunted house. THE FINAL CHAPTER (actually part 4) and PART VII: JASON LIVES are the quintessential Jason films. FINAL CHAPTER is brutal and efficient, while JASON LIVES knows its audience and leans into the camp.

I really wanted to like it, but the more I think about it, the more I realize FANTASTIC FOUR just isn't that great. It feels like an extended montage of genuinely slick visuals and intriguing casting choices in search of an actual movie. A classic style over substance misfire.
