The subtle pleasure of a yearly tradition… 😋

I always think of two lines as justification whenever I catch myself doing something weird like facing the shelves of a store I don’t work in, or going the extra mile at an already-thankless job: “The standard you walk by is the standard you accept.” “Leave things better than you found them.”

I despair of the just-so worlds that so many people are desperately trying to create. Woefully-naïve Puriteens. Morally-bankrupt True Believers. Sociopathic Technocrats. Each one—among many others—believes that Paradise is just around the corner, just out-of-reach because the world isn’t just so.

The most unrealistic part of Severance. A flip phone that lasts for well over a week—maybe two—on a a single charge. #spoilers?

My motivation to drop a diaper/shirt size? Had to rebook a Southwest flight into the fresh hell that is their Assigned Seat Era, and had to choose a middle seat to sit with my husband. Nothing else in my life has worked, but this might be the one. I’ll sticky note it to the Peloton screen. 😅

I planned a nice dinner for myself. But, I’m already so hungry that it’s going to be a photo finish.

I will miss the kind of Christmas with overflowing gifts, a festival of greed wrapped up in pretty paper. But, I know those days are pretty firmly behind me, that I already have so much—too much, in fact—and that, moreover, I can buy just about anything I want…

There’s something distinctly on-brand with removing a well-used children’s play area to put in a Tesla dealership.

I have spent my first day off being useless and floppy, and it’s killing me. All the things I could get done and I’ve wasted most of the day. The only comfort I can take from the experience is the objective understanding that, sometimes, you really just need to do nothing. Still sucks…

One more day, and then I can start cleaning up after all the mess I’ve been accumulating over the last month and a half while at redline at work over this disastrous project. 😅

Watching Severance, and the Severed floor is giving me Control’s Oldest House vibes. I love it.

The pressure keeps amping up at work. I’ve done very little Christmas shopping for lack of free focus to even think about what to get—given less than a week to get anything here. And, I’ve spent so much time alone with dark thoughts…

Started watching Severance, which, in this first episode tick-tocks between subtle hilarity and subtle discomfort. I think I like it, but… oof.

Watching “Kingsman: The Golden Circle”. It is, like the original, amazing at not taking itself seriously. 😁

I frequently read back through my own thoughts, and found this one. I *need* to refind this source material and see if it offers some guidance on WTF to do. Appraisal season is in full swing, and I—having become a full-time side-quester—am finding myself without a narrative to my work… 😅

It’s weird to have folks at work, in their most honest moments, tell me how respected I am. My response is a mix of sheepish acknowledgement—“really…?”—flat out refusal—“nah, not really…”—objective acknowledgement—“I mean, I guess I exhibit these behaviors… 🤔”—and bewilderment—“really?! how?!”

Whoops! Did a few alcohols for dinner… Probably should have solid food.

I’m looking forward to some Christmas-season viewing…

Reading through the latest by Murakami Haruki: “The City and Its Uncertain Walls”. Just a handful of short chapters in, but it’s giving me “Hard Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World”.

Excuse myself from a get-together because someone who really doesn’t like me will be there, and I want to keep the other friend. Husband plans on hitting gym between work shifts, and I support it wholeheartedly. Mom is out and about having lunch with old work friends in a surprise change…

Kind of blown away by Libby. When I first checked it out about a year (two years?) ago, it was kind of janky and didn’t really feel like it worked that well. But today, I borrowed an audiobook, listened to it—it was only an hour long—and returned it, and the whole process was hassle free.

Leaving the house early because I couldn’t sleep last night and I step out into a gentle, light snowfall. Debating whether I should even be going to work. But, if I don’t, I’d probably play hooky. It’s been a very rough week—running at redline and being exhausted—but there’s still so much to do.

ELP’s “Karn Evil 9 3rd Impression” will always be a banger to me. I am particularly taken by the lines “No man yields who flies in my ship” and “Let the bridge computer speak”. Very futuristic and spacey. But, even more than the first 2 impressions, it really tells a story.

Having a chronic condition can really take the life out of you… The partial incontinence, funny enough, I can deal with. I’m in a diaper 99% of the time. It got this. But, it’s the gut problems that really sap my energy and mood. In low-grade pain for days on end, not sleeping, the works…

Started the process of replacing one of my major credit cards. It’s gotten a little easier, with the advent of mobile wallets, and the CC companies allowing recurring charges to go through. But, it’s still a process (I *really* don’t need right now) to update everything and remember a new number.

I have an odd fraud situation going on now. Someone ordered two pieces of software using my Sweetwater account. Had the keys delivered to my email address. Used my CC. I didn’t place the order. Didn’t even get the receipt—just the key delivery notice. Now, have to figure out what’s compromised.

When I have new non-babyfur furries over and have to close off bits of the house…

I think, despite all the stress and ridiculousness of this job—the nature of which I’ve shared in countless Tweets and Skeets over the years—what will really stick with me from this time is how unfair it has been to be in a position to never get ahead, to always be cleaning up others messes…

It’s probably a good thing I don’t have expressive ears IRL. They’d probably be flattened in frustration and annoyance 95% of the time…
