When Donnie Yen finally hangs up being an actor, I can see him having a much better late-stage career than Jackie Chan. Jackie is making fluff for a quick paycheck. I think Donnie will continue to direct great action films. He just needs to find the right talent.

I watched THE PROSECUTOR (2025) last night. Easily Donnie Yen’s finest work as a director. I absolutely loved it. Do NOT go in expecting Flashpoint or Raging Fire. This is a legal thriller with a few action sequences. The action is amazing though. It feels fresh and more age appropriate for Donnie.

Yes!! Welcome to the cool kid club! Hard Boiled is universally loved and I understand why but The Killer just has something extra about it. It’s the atmosphere of the film. Plus, the church shootout is my favourite shootout of all time.

I decided to finally buy Audition today. I don’t actually know if I’ve ever seen it. I mean, I know the twist and I’ve seen the really gruesome bit but I don’t actually know what happens in the film. I don’t really know the plot.

#NowWatching Kingdom (2019) I’v been promising myself to watch these for years but I’ve just never gotten around to it. I’m kicking off 2025 right by finally getting to them.

Legendary martial artist, actor, stuntman, stunt coordinator and, at one time, bodyguard to the stars, Richard Norton, turns 75 today. Norton needs to be given his flowers. He’s always had an amazing on screen presence. Here he is whooping Andy Lau and Cynthia Rothrock in Magic Crystal (1986).

Give it a listen. Enjoy the sultry magic of two Brits chatting it up about a Renny Harlin classic.

#NowWatching Jingle All the Way (1996) This one’s a first-time watch for me. I’m not sure it’s considered a Christmas classic, but I’m trying to squeeze in a few Chrimbo movies I haven’t seen.

Thank the lord! I go to the cinema on Christmas Day each year but this year I was left with Kraven tickets because nothing else was showing. Well, the theater I go to announced today that they’re screening Nosferatu, so the wife and I canceled Kraven and got tickets to that instead. Sweet.

The wife and I are spending Christmas Eve and Christmas Day watching Christmas movies. I’ll be watching Jingle All the Way for the first time and I want to introduce her to Black Christmas. Preferably the original, though I know the remake’s probably safer due to its cheese. But which action flick?

#JustWatched Anora (2024) Excellent film. I don’t think it’s going to end up in my top 10 for the year but it really is superb. Mikey Madison blows the roof off with her performance. Amazing stuff. She deserves an Oscar nom. I do think is sags a little at one point but it’s nothing major.

I know we’ve had the term “Armchair Psychologist” for a long time but every filmbro is all of a sudden an “Armchair Cinematographer.” So many opinions on the Superman trailer’s aesthetic, choice of camera, etc. Or maybe my “eye for cinema” is shite, because I think it looks great.

I’m going to the dispensary tomorrow morning to buy my first vape pen and then I’ve got two days of pure movie watching. No work. Definitely going to watch Anora and The Outrun. The rest are a little up in the air. Juror #2? Conclave? Probably both.

Was shitting my pants all day over being on someone’s podcast. Recorded earlier and had a great time! Just fun-as-fuck movie banter. Nothing quite like it.

When they finally make the last Final Destination film, I really hope they call it Final Final Destination.

When it comes to martial arts focused Chinese dramas, ATV’s Blood Debt may have the crispest fight choreography. Even with undercranking it looks amazing. Just good old fashioned shapes. There are loads of fights scattered throughout, too. Definitely one for genre fans to seek out.

I feel very much lied to. Gladiator II was flames.

#JustWatched Carry-On (2024) I absolutely LOVED this! A tension filled thriller with Die Hard 2-lite vibes and wonderful twists and turns. The cast is fantastic and it had be gripped the entire run time. It may be one of my favourites if the year. They don’t make ‘em like this anymore.

My cheeky little addition to #LetterboxdFriday. A pretty solid run, even if I didn’t like Heretic nearly as much as I’d hoped. A Different Man is stuck in my noggin. Lots to think about with that one. And not just Sebastian Stan’s knob. #LastFourWatched

A stand-alone Clayface flick really could be a landmark in body horror. Like a modern version of The Fly…only more clayish. Flanagan could pull it off too. He has a good eye for visceral violence. See Gerald’s Game’s “hand scene.”

I love that Criterion are releasing more Godzilla flicks in 4K since I’m at the start of my Godzilla journey, but I’m skeptical. Is there going to be a box-set further down the road? If there is a box-set, will it cost $15,000? These questions need answering!

Make her the killer! Have her son the fisherman’s coat, hat and hook and hunt down her old friends. That way NO ONE remembers what they did that summer. BOOM! This shit writes itself.

Today’s #physicalmedia has been a long time coming. The new 4K mediabook of THE ROUNDUP: PUNISHMENT. Saw a janky-subtitle-having rip of this that barely made sense, so I’m looking forward to actually understanding the plot this time around. Oh yeah, and that slaps. I’m pumped for the slaps.

My quest to get the wife to watch Black Christmas is failing. I blatantly tried to sell her on it last night and she seemed almost impressively disinterested.

I went to the weed dispensary for the first time today. I got some gummies that are 10mg a pop. I wanted to start low and slow. I’m about 90 minutes into taking one and it’s really not quite what I wanted. I think I’m looking for a stronger high than this. I want to sink into my couch a bit.

Tonight I watched The Wild Robot and I’m still thinking about it. Me? Weep like a bitch? Your momma wept like a bitch. It’s a profoundly beautiful film. Truly. One that wraps the soul in a warm blanket. I’m sure it’s even more special if you have kids. We need more profound kids films.

My wife has convinced me to take my first trip to a dispensary this weekend. My anxiety is through the fuckin’ roof lately and I need something to take the edge off. Going to ask for VERY low dosage gummies to start with. I can’t continue like this; with a constant bowling ball in my chest.

I really enjoyed the first two episodes of Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. It has that wonderful sense of adventure rarely found on films these days. Very 80’s. I also like that we get to see the Star Wars suburbs. It’s an interesting look at the universe.

Last year I struggled with the existential crisis of having Billie Eilish as my most listened to artist. This year, I stand strong as a hip hop head. Nothing but rap music, baby. As for my top 5 songs, you can ignore those. They are equally as embarrassing as the Billie Eilish thing.

Today’s #physicalmedia pickup is the chunky new 4K limited edition (4 discs!) of Godzilla Minus One. It also includes Godzilla Minus Colour which I haven’t seen yet.

“It never gets easy, but it does get less hard.” Seven years into my sobriety and I still get cravings. I still can’t sit at a bar, even to order a Coke. I still can’t kiss my wife after she’s had a cocktail. It’s a fight but a fight worth fighting.

My top 10 Christmas movies…

For the last few months I’ve been trying to construct my “Top 10 Fave Films” list. I’ve been struggling. This is what I have so far…

Chor Yuen strikes again. A messy film that only gets messier as it goes along. I struggled to focus the whole time. The action was fine (though nothing great), but I just wasn’t digging this one. Good for a one-off watch, but I won’t be revisiting soon.

Hong Kong cinema fans! Diabolik DCD has the German media book of Angel Terminators. If you want one, hurry up. Those things sell quickly.

#NowWatching The Sentimental Swordsman (1977) I’ve never seen this one. Love Ti Lung and Derek Yee so it should be an easy watch.
