Two Pillars of (Engineering) Management
A former colleague once described their view of management as a role measured by two* pillars. As an IC, I really like this framing of it and it's helped me a ton of times in knowing how to best work ...

I wrote a long rant about "AI" today in which I described Jack as an "insepid Rasputin-drawn-from-memory and serial company-destroyer", but I'm not sure posting it on my blog is a good idea in this environment. Couldn't waste that burn, though.

Truly incredible the amount of damage Elon and Jack have done to the tech industry in a few short years.

I was just talking about this with my manager and skip today. There's definitely a bit of a glass ceiling in these sorts of roles.

I *despise* people using AI to write announcements at work. If you can't be bothered to write it, why should I bother reading it?

Another victim of Google's shitty trade-in process. Box arrived empty, despite me sending them a video of me sealing it in the box + proof of postage. $0 and no recourse - can't even do a credit card chargeback as they'll delete your account. So that's nice.

Not really surprising. Yeah, it might get you 80% of the way there, but we all know that reading someone else's code and finding the issues takes much, much longer than just building it ourselves. It tracks that the last 20% takes longer than expected.

Interfaces are your best friend. Put wrappers around third party code, especially for data requests. It will be an immense help for testing and for changing data sources over time.
