Safe standing has been STH-only since it came in – initially to allow STHs to move in, and then after that window closed as the club monitored its introduction. It’s always been important to allow single ticket sales for any available spaces – and home games after tonight’s game will do this.

The new Safe Standing area opens today at last, over 34 years since the last standing tickets on the Kop were sold. The area gives fans a choice to stand at games with the club’s blessing, and the hope is that this will also add to the atmosphere for the benefit of all at the ground #bskyblades

Tonight’s venue, the Stadium of Light, is a new safe standing provider in this yr’s Championship. In the summer, they introduced safe standing in the upper sections of both the South (~2,000 capacity) and North (~1,000) stands. This followed pressure from the SGSA to address persistent standing.

A good bit of the opening statement from the new owners on the importance of the fans. While there are lots of potential areas to invest in, there is too a real opportunity here to invest in the fans and look at ways to enhance the atmosphere. Safe standing has to be a part of that investment.
