Day 20: Surreal Fever Dream Come True So I was thinking this wasn’t especially out there until something happened that makes the leg creatures from Silent Hill 2 look cuddly. Then the ending was like the Junji Ito story that most scares me, and now I’m shaken. 😭 #HQHalloween

Day 19: Unusual Creature Feature Frankie Freako The world needs more movies that are just fun to watch and then bow out. The freakos are assholes in the most Gremlins/Leprechaun way possible, even if this wasn’t particularly horrific. #HQHalloween

Day 18: Non-English Home Invasion Kidnapped Definitely didn’t need the SA, but the filmmaking was great with the split screen and limited number of long shots. Also… what a dire movie. Wish Shudder had the Spanish-language track since the dub was oddly hard to hear. #HQHalloween

Day 17: Fulci or Bava Lisa and the Devil The story wasn’t super clear (makes sense reading the release history), but what a lovely movie. Lots to think about, and a great ending. :V #HQHalloween

Day 16: Blair Witch Knock-off Willow Creek Very different topic than Blair Witch but followed the general idea pretty closely. Local community interviews followed by the quickly escalating tensions at the end. Enjoyed this plenty, and the tent scene was a welcome climax. #HQHalloween

Day 15: Retreat/Airbnb Horror Margaux Dang this movie was fun. Always worried about AI movies since they can be major duds, but this leaned into the pleasant dumbness. Also, all my The 100 and Riverdale peeps. 🥲 Love what Vanessa Morgan had to work with here. #HQHalloween

Day 14: Letterboxd Bottom 500 2012: Doomsday Limiting the list to movies with 1k ratings really helps raise the quality floor of these movies. This was FINE. Having seen so many of these bottom X movies inoculates me to their mediocrity. #HQHalloween

Day 13: Danny Trejo American Nightmares So Danny Trejo doesn’t really have much to do here other than laugh menacingly, but I do love an anthology with a message… even if that message is about as subtle as you’d expect from something two movies removed from Tales From the Hood. #HQHalloween

Day 11: Satanic Panic Skullduggery It wouldn’t be Satanic Panic without being afraid of Dungeons and Dragons*! The movie was just fine, but the theme song rules. *Not actualy DnD. #HQHalloween

Day 10: Udo Kier The Editor What a wild homage to giallo films. It always makes me happy when I can spot references now, but I’ve still got a long, long list of gialli to get to. #HQHalloween

Day 9: Friday the 13th Knock-Off Don’t Go in the Woods Look, you tell me a movie is regional horror and I am seated. Granted there’s usually not much to say about them, but this one actually had a specific musical theme that I REALLY liked. #HQHalloween

Yeah. Jennifer Lopez is getting an Oscar for this. Absolutely recommended. Tonatiuh, Diego Luna, and Jennifer Lopez are all incredible. I’d never seen the musical before, but this is such a good addition to the book and original movie.

Day 8: Hates Eyes See No Evil How about an entire movie about eyes?! It’s, um… not fantastic, but it sure is fun seeing various production choices and being able to name every movie it’s borrowing from. Sure feels like a lot of the same editing choices as Saw… #HQHalloween

Day 7: Letterboxd Top 50 Horror The Wolf House What an absolute work of art. Really reminded me of the Czech Alice in Wonderland movie from 1988 in tone and presentation. I also want to know much more about the world that was set up in the framing device. #HQHalloween

This absolutely rules, and very glad to have been part of that box office. (With the caveat that it’s absolutely shit that this is even a thing that is necessary.)

Day 6: Mexican Folk Horror The Curse of the Crying Woman This movie felt like it was made in a style from way before 1961, so that was a very neat watch. Way different from the other La Llorona stories I’ve seen (granted one was Riverdale, so…). Must watch more! #HQHalloween

Day 5: Pam Grier Something Wicked This Way Comes Her part wasn’t big here, but damn if she didn’t look stunning doing it. I’d never heard of this before, and I wish Disney did more dark films like this. 🥲 #HQHalloween

Day 4: Non-English Found Footage [•Rec]³: Genesis Alrighty, so it’s mostly not found footage, but I just watched 2, so good excuse to watch this. There was a peculiar amount of humor included that I’m not totally sure about, but Leticia Dolera sure does look badass. #HQHalloween

Day 3: Hates Hands Idle Hands Quite silly, but that cast?! What a wild assortment of people to all have in one place. Very fun effects, as well. #HQHalloween

Day 2: NoES Knock-Off Wishmaster This definitely feels way more Candyman or Hellraiser than Nightmare on Elm Street, but the assholery of The Djinn is very Freddy. Will definitely be watching the rest of this series. #HQHalloween

Just finished Bone Lake, and that movie kinda ruled. Great mix of relationship cringe and cat and mouse sequences.

If you want to fully lose every military dependent or veteran in one single move, then fuck with the commissaries. I promise you do not want to go down that road. (The last time our commissary made a mildly inconvenient change, it was THE issue for months. People don’t just move on.)
