Labour has already passed 50 new laws to tackle the cost of living, empower local communities and get a better deal for working people. In today’s King’s Speech we’re going further, with action on energy bills, national security, and making public services fit for the future.

It was great to get to meet the Integrated Neighbourhood Team that serves Bestwood and hear about their work. The team brings together GPs, community nurses, mental health workers, and many more to help get individuals with complex needs the best care.

Seven and a half years ago, I first introduced a bill to Parliament to make assault of retail workers a specific crime. It’s been a long road but I’m incredibly proud that today our campaign has been successful, and this has become law.

Today, renters across the UK are waking up to new protections. Labour’s Renters’ Rights Act, there will be no more ‘no fault’ evictions, no rental bidding wars and no unfair rent hikes.

Recently I met with working barristers as well as the Chair and other leaders from the Bar Council, for a visit to Nottingham Crown Court. It was incredibly valuable to hear directly from the front line about what support they need from the government.

Our landmark deal with France will be based on results. For the first time ever, extra funding will be tied to real outcomes. We’re putting more boots on the ground and stepping up maritime tactics to stop illegal taxi boats. If it doesn’t work, we won’t fund it.

More than one thousand kids in Nottingham North and Kimberley are now benefitting from Labour’s free breakfast clubs, rolling out in schools across the country.

There were more than 400 asylum hotels under the previous government – that number has been more than halved, with 11 more closing this week. Labour is bringing the asylum system under control.

It was a pleasure to be invited to join Dawoodi Bohra community of Nottingham this Ramadan to break their fast. The Bohras make a huge contribution to our local community and it was great to be able to share this evening with them.

The energy price cap is falling by £117 because of choices made in the last budget. Labour is tackling the cost of living, creating more clean energy at home, and investing in warmer homes.

It was great to join the Aspley councillors recently on a visit to Lily & Co on Minver Crescent. From nursery care to food and clothes banks, Lily & Co have become a community hub, and it was a pleasure to see a little bit of the work they do for their community.

Yesterday I spoke in Parliament about how Labour has already reduced the number of people in asylum accommodation by a third, after the last government let it get out of control. We’re going to keep up the pressure and close more asylum hotels until there are none left.

I spoke on BBC Breakfast this morning about the importance of the Prime Minister's visit to Beijing this week. This government will work with China in the UK's best interests, but we will also challenge them where necessary.

Today we remember the six million Jews murdered by the Nazis, and all their other victims including LGBT+, Roma and disabled people. We remember also the victims of genocide since and recommit ourselves to building a better world.

Under Labour, immigration enforcement is at the highest levels ever, with 74% more raids and 83% more arrests. We’re sending a clear message to people coming to work here illegally - and to dodgy bosses using illegal labour to undercut their competitors.

I dropped into the Royal Mail Delivery Office in Bulwell to thank all the posties for their hard work, throughout the year, and particularly in the Christmas rush.

Last month I joined other Nottinghamshire MPs to meet with trade union UNISON to take about social care. It was great to hear from the workers themselves and listen to what improvements they want to see.

I am so proud to be able to be part of a government that is finally delivering for our communities. For years the Tories underfunded local government, and we all paid the price. Now Labour is investing in our communities again, with £234m for Nottinghamshire County and £154m for Nottingham City.

I visited CRISP Vocational Provision in Bulwell last month to hear about how they support young people with vocational training as well as core subjects. The students were learning about democracy for UK Parliament Week, so I was happy drop in and answer some questions.
