Orwell's nightmare was the fascism and neo-fascism the free world just defeated would re-emerge in a different form. As Margaret Atwood pointed out, the books actually provides a HAPPY ending...

(2) The narrative voice in Wm. Burroughs novels doesn't move toward emotional/spiritual health, for example. B is focused on larger social issues. In the novels of Andrew Vachss, the criminal narrators don't move towards being law-abiding citizens. V knew in his guts that would've been dishonest.
