These cut NIH funding programs are the main source of training for 1000s of students at MSIs, PUIs & underresourced institutions across the US. So many scientists at top institutions came through these programs. The demographics of who does science will be set back to the 1980s.

Surprise surprise, science education grants in minority communities like #PuertoRico + #USVirginIslands are on the chopping block bc, guess what, populations they serve are predominantly minority. Oh, add to that projects exploring how to improve natural disaster relief & resiliency #HurricaneMaria

Colleagues in #PuertoRico just told me that the pause in funding cuts to grants from NIH does not include US territories! Support for administrative costs (real expenses) @uprrp.bsky.social is going from 49% to 15%, a huge blow to a system already suffering staggering cuts by @fombpr.bsky.social

And (I believe) Puerto Rico and other territories... 83 awards in FY2024

I see the same thing for the IMSD, MARC, G-RISE and Bridges to Doctorate programs, but unfortunately the link to NIH's interest in diversity is still inactive (see ex grants.nih.gov/grants/guide...) 🧪

Relieved that the MOSAIC K99/R00 grants.gov page is no longer expired (updated today), and it sounds like people are able to submit apps again 🧪

Just in case you thought that removing DEI criteria would mean that everyone is competing equally: NIH is removing grad students from underrepresented backgrounds from the applicant pool altogether. Their applications will not be considered. Other students, not from these backgrounds, will be.

I also heard from a colleague who saw F31-Diversity proposals pulled from their stack. Knowing how much time and energy each student invests in their proposal, this is heartbreaking. We will lose our best and brightest future scientists.

I was honored to receive the 2025 MLK Humanitarian Award from New York University last night. In my remarks, I noted that to receive an award bearing Dr. King's name is both humbling and challenging for, in this critical moment, his legacy demands of us not mere words, but action and courage. 🧵

Darby makes this point but I just want to reinforce it: These words are entirely legitimate to discuss science, accurately and correctly. This attack on "DEI" (🙄) is not only an attempt to resegregate science but also an attack on expertise, itself. Resisting it is a defense of science

Ruth Kirststein’s contributions to the National Institutes of Health were tremendous, both programmatically and culturally. She was totally devoted to NIH and biomedical science. She and her husband, Al Rabson, lived in one of a small number of houses actually on the NIH campus. 2/n

I cannot stress enough how important private funding will be for underrepresented (UR) scientists for the next 4 years. NSF and NIH fund summer research opportunities for UR undergrad students in STEM, mentoring programs starting in high school, funds for UR PhD students, & more.

Universities that value their trainees should file suit to compel NSF to follow through on its lawful obligations already made.

I am so, so exhausted. So is every other Federal employee I know. We need YOU to pick up your phones and call your Congresspeople. We need lawyers filing lawsuits. We need private organizations with big endowments (ahem, universities) putting up a fight and saying NO. We need real journalism.
