At PMQs today, Rishi Sunak called for a targeted national screening programme for prostate cancer, backed by evidence from Prostate Cancer Research and others. Deputy PM David Lammy voiced strong support and a personal connection to the cause.

Earlier this week, I met with representatives from @pcr-uk.bsky.social to back their new campaign calling for targeted prostate cancer screening - a change that could save thousands of lives across the UK. Early detection saves lives and it’s vital that access to screening and support is available.

Prof Stephen Langley attended a House of Commons meeting hosted by Prostate Cancer Research, launching a campaign for a UK-wide targeted prostate cancer screening programme. Building on our work testing 18,300 at-risk men in Surrey and Sussex, The Prostate Project continues to lead the way.

I am pleased to support the campaign for prostate cancer screening. Prostate Cancer Research estimates that an annual investment of £25m to deliver targeted screening would mean an estimated 1,254 years of life saved for the target groups each year.

Great to drop by the Prostate Cancer Research reception today. PCR’s recent report demonstrates that a national screening programme is not just life saving, but cost effective. Prostate cancer remains the most common cancer in men, it is high time the Government worked to reduced these statistics.

The UK Government has today (Thursday 3 July) launched its 10 Year Health Plan for England, in which it has set out its vision for the NHS to shift more care from hospitals into local communities, accelerate a move towards more digital ways of working, and improve efforts to prevent ill health.

93% of GPs believe a national screening programme for high-risk groups would have a positive outcome on diagnosis and patient outcomes. This is according to a survey of 400 GPs across the UK.

94% of GPs would support launch of a national prostate cancer screening programme for high-risk men. As the National Screening Committee reviews prostate cancer screening policy, GPs across the UK were asked for their opinions on the reforms under consideration.
