Dear PhD students, PDRAs and early career researchers, You may be aware of a recent UKRI funding restructure announcement (there is a discussion here: . In STFC-funded science, particle physics, astronomy, and nuclear physics are facing 30% cuts to research areas. This is obviously a disaster and will impact the future careers of many of you. There are currently two PhD positions available at the Centre for Mathematical Plasma Astrophysics at KU Leuven, with an intended start date in September 2026. The first position focuses on incorporating radiative emission processes into particle-in-cell simulations of the solar corona, and on investigating how energy is released during turbulence and magnetic reconnection. The second position focuses on the reflection and interaction of magnetohydrodynamic waves in the solar corona, using both analytical derivations and numerical simulations. We would like to highlight an upcoming session at AOGS 2026 that may be of interest to the UK solar and space plasma physics community: ST29: Linking Plasma Dynamics in the Lower Solar Atmosphere to Magnetic Activity The Sun exhibits a wide range of magnetic activity (flares, atmospheric heating, and the solar wind) ultimately rooted in dynamo processes beneath the surface.

Call for abstracts: COSPAR-26-E2.6: WAVES IN THE SOLAR ATMOSPHERE: THEORY, MODELLING, AND OBSERVATIONS
Description It is a well-established fact that the magnetised plasma in the solar atmosphere is filled with waves. From standing waves in closed magnetic structures to propagating waves that can reach the solar wind, observations have shown them crossing and linking together the different layers of the solar atmosphere. Focus has been placed on their potential role in heating the atmosphere and driving the solar wind and on their extensive use as tools for plasma diagnostics in coronal seismology.

COSPAR-26-E2.5: Symbiosis of Waves and Reconnection (SWAR): a New Physical Insight into Understanding Heating and Plasma Dynamics at the Sun
Description: The Sun’s corona is maintained at mega-Kelvin temperature and fills the heliosphere with the supersonic outflowing wind. The dissipation of magnetic waves and electric current are well known for the heating and dynamics of the various layers of the solar atmosphere. However, a substantial debate still exists on the relative role of waves and reconnection in heating the localized plasma structures and generation of the mass cycles and flows.
