Tasmanian tiger caught on film! I was able to visit Tasmania and view some bones, pelts and taxidermy specimens to help figure this thylacine model out.

How a ‘putrid’ find in a museum cupboard could be the key to bringing the Tasmanian tiger back to life
A well-preserved thylacine head was a gruesome sight – but it also contained RNA molecules crucial to reconstructing the extinct animal’s genome Breakthroughs sometimes turn up in unexpected places. The researchers working on the international push to bring back the thylacine say they found theirs in a long-ignored bucket in the back of a cupboard at a Melbourne museum. It contained an astonishingly well-preserved head of the extinct marsupial, also known as the Tasmanian tiger. Continue reading...

Quolls and bettongs join bilbies and bandicoots as locally extinct species reintroduced to NSW national park
‘It’s like time-travelling,’ says Dr Rebecca West – ‘we’re reversing and going back to what it would have been like 200 years ago’ Follow our Australia news live blog for latest updates Get our breaking news email, free app or daily news podcast Quolls and bettongs delivered to the far north-west corner of New South Wales are the final piece of a decade-long project to reintroduce seven locally extinct mammals to the arid desert landscape. Twenty burrowing bettongs and 20 western quolls have been released into Sturt national park as part of the Wild Deserts project. They joined previously released and flourishing populations of bilbies, bandicoots and mulgaras (a small but ferocious native predator). I’ve said this before this most recent spat of “sightings” but I really feel the persistence of thylacine sightings has more to do with humanity’s guilt over extinction than a real animal surviving out there.

Anoplotaenia dasyuri is a tapeworm that lives specifically in the gut of Tasmanian Devils. The larvae of this worm have been found in pademleon & wallabies (which are commonly eaten by Tassie Devils), but also in the extinct thylacine...

Jack Ashby's latest article explores colonial violence in Tasmania. Victorian letters reveal how one man built a scientific reputation by exchanging the remains of Tasmanian Aboriginal people and thylacines for honours from elite societies.

It's National Wombat Day in Australia, so here's to the animal with the best butt among mammals. Not only does it poop cubes, but it can also crush an enemy with its shield-like behind. And wombat pouches face backwards, so that the joeys don't get covered in soil when mum is digging. 🧪 🦊 🍑
