On September 1, 2025, the judges elected in Mexico's first judicial election took office. This was the culmination of the judicial reform initiated by former president López Obrador and carried out under current president Sheinbaum.

The Supreme Federal Tribunal (STF) in Brazil convicted former president Jair Bolsonaro of plotting a coup and sentenced him to 27 years in prison. Brazil’s highest court, the STF is responsible for adjudicating criminal cases against presidents and other top government officials.

Mexican president Claudia Sheinbaum is pursuing a massive reform of the electoral system, which is expected to involve a reduction in the number of seats allocated through proportional representation as well as reductions to party financing.

On June 11, as the Colombian legislature debated labor reform, President Gustavo Petro signed a decree calling for a referendum on labor reform, which was later suspended. Petro then pledged to include a special ballot in the next elections to call for a constituent assembly.
