Nicely restored chimney on what was once 16 Regent Park Terrace, a former home of John Bennie Wilson, architect, founder member of, and striker for, Third Lanark. The original fell in a 2025 gale. It was rebuilt by Strathbungo mason Karl Schweps. Perfect colour matching too. (Original on the right.)

Perish the thought that you might want to get married in church. An account of the first wedding to take place in a parish church in Pollokshaws, in 1877. Some old worthies at the back muttered "this was unco like popery".

Quick shout out to two Victorian businesses I came across during some research this week. J & G Mossman, monumental sculptors, and J & R Anderson, decorators. Both are still trading to this day!

8 Moray Place, whose first resident was Margaret Hay Spence, and her husband James Simpson, a jeweller. Margaret was born in Haroldswick on Unst, in almost the most northerly house in Britain.

No 7 Moray Place, home of Mike & Hilary Stanger, fundamental to the founding of The Strathbungo Society in the early 1970s.

William McIntosh moved into 15 Regent Park Square around Christmas 1895 (having been at no 6 a few years earlier). He was an inspector with Glasgow Police Force, and their tug-o-war captain. But he was more famous as the father of the architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. #Strathbungo #househistory

Another resident at 15 Regent Park Square was Peter Niven, former factor at Househill in Nitshill. He managed the Victoria coal pit there at the time of the great pit explosion of 1851 that claimed the lives of 61 men and boys. It was, at the time, the worst recorded Scottish mining disaster.

15 Regent Park Square wasn’t just the home of Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The Aberfeldy-born Rev John Duff Macgregor was resident in the 1870s. He was minister of Stockwell Street Free Church (which was actually in Howard Street). #Strathbungo #househistory #charlesrenniemackintosh

And so to my favourite resident of 17 Regent Park Square. The house was owned by the Skaifes from 1947, but in the 1950s they had a lodger, one Mr Boothroyd. Harold Skaife and Geoffrey Boothroyd were avid fans of the #JamesBond novels, but Geoffrey was also a gun expert. And Ian Fleming wasn't.

Jane and Elizabeth Aitken were sisters who purchased 17 Regent Park Square around 1882-5. Their upbringing was odd, to say the least.

Andrew McAllan was the son of a calico printer from Bonhill, on the River Leven. He and his brother owned the Dillichip Works there. He had offices in town, and lived off Paisley Road West. He married Margaret Guthrie of Bonhill in 1850 and had a large family, but.. #househistory #strathbungo

31 Regent Park Square #Strathbungo was built by Daniel McNicol in 1864. McNicol didn't make it to 50, dying in 1872. He was one of at least three Strathbungo builders I have identified who died before they were 50. The first occupant was there only briefly, and died the following year at a mere 33.

Great stuff, right up my street as it were. Thought Glasgow was rough, but Strathbungo can't match this.

Here's another #househistory for #Strathbungo, this time 38 Queen Square, built in 1866 by Daniel McNicol.

One of my fave pointless trivia facts. William Stirling-Maxwell, Renfrewshire landowner & feuar of most of Strathbungo, had this ring of tenements laid out round Nithsdale Road & Street and March Street. But he couldn't complete the design because one small corner was in Lanarkshire and not his.

I'm old enough to remember "Plant a tree in '73". Sure saved the planet from climate catastrophe. Love how the Prince and Princess of Gloucester came to Glasgow and planted...a rock.

Inspired by @lifeisafestival.bsky.social I went to take a look, and found the other end of the former suspension bridge across the White Cart.

#OnThisDay tragedy struck in #Strathbungo, just past 8am. A gang of seven workmen were on the down line at Strathbungo Station inspecting the sleepers. They stepped aside for the Kilmarnock train then got back to work.

This is a great picture that shows Alfred Howell's tobacconist on the corner of Argyle and Union Street - his name is on the awning. The hotel here was replaced by The Adelphi, later Boots and the famous Dissy Corner, then replaced again by KFC.

As a fan of old windows, just why?

Chuffed I've found a few more of the builders of Strathbungo and now have pretty much a complete set. The architects, not so much...

Evil goings on in Strathbungo. By co-incidence I'm contemplating trying to reconstruct this period in Strathbungo history, but there's not much to go on.

A Shawlands curiosity. Smiths Garage on Moss-Side Road in 1926, now Shawlands Continental foodstore. I just noticed the open fireplaces on the tenement wall behind, that are still there. These were built after 1911, I'm guessing same time as the garage (this photo is 1926). So why? Change of plans?

Another #Strathbungo #househistory - this time it's 52 Marywood Square, or formerly, 25 Moray Place. The first occupant was a wine and gin merchant who drowned at Rothesay. The second was a linen merchant who died soon after moving in.

Following the post by @ncdominie.bsky.social on Eglinton Toll, site of The Star Bar, here's some history behind it. The original toll bar was run by Walter Hill, who in the early 1840s employed a young William Stevenson to collect tolls, and run the associated licenced premises...

Also for St Andrew's Day, let us celebrate this Angry Man in Local Newspaper complaining that St Andrew's Cross had been referred to by its old name of Eglinton Toll. (The AMiLN was Neil Downie, proprietor of what's now the Star Bar, who'd had the new name carved across the front of the building.)

The little-known Haggs Cage on the Pollok estate (left). This Victorian hunting lodge was said to be modelled on Lyme Cage in Cheshire (right). The similarity is quite striking.
