Forth Yards is am amazing location on the banks of the Tyne yet it's stood mostly unused for 20 years. We simply couldn’t miss this opportunity when new homes are so needed! I’m delighted that we’ve secured £121.8m for up to 2,500 homes on the edge of Newcastle city centre 🏘️

Stagecoach could simply dip into the massive profits and settle this! Unite just want drivers paid the same as elsewhere in the country. Drivers don’t want to strike and cause disruption but they shouldn't be short-changed either. I told Stagecoach bosses last week we need this sorted asap.

The North is home to some of the best universities in Britain . We’re known for innovation! Yet, once again that legacy is ignored. More Whitehall-centric decisions saying talent only exists in the South? It’s not good enough. It needs to change and change for good.

A big day for families as we launch the North East Child Poverty Action Plan. Our region has shamefully high levels of child poverty- we have to act! With a £28.6m investment, we’ll do just that. We’ll expand baby box deliveries, give grants to pregnant mams, increase youth services and such more.

Young people don't hold back on saying what matters to them, and why should they? These brilliant students from Dene Academy are full of ideas and they want action! We covered so much from climate change to jobs and buses🌳👷‍♀️🚌 What matters is what happens next- turning their ideas into opportunity.

High streets are the lifeblood of communities and we want to see them thrive. Great to open Newcastle Building Society’s flagship branch. They are investing in high streets and community spaces with new branches at a time when other banks are abandoning face to face banking.

Our Tyne and Wear Metro’s creaking 1980s signalling system needs replaced🚇 I promised I’d secure the investment we need. I’m delighted to confirm the Government has committed to funding the upgrade.🎉 That means we can get to work on delivering the world-class public transport our region deserves.

Tyne Bridge cash secured! We’d never let the restoration of our iconic Tyne Bridge go unfinished. Now, thanks to the £1.85bn transport settlement we secured it’s funded! That means our beautiful bridge will be back to its former glory in time for its centenary in 2028!

Too many bus stops aren’t up to scratch in the North East. We’re fixing that. We’re already replacing hundreds across County Durham. And now we’re investing £3.5m to do more across the rest of the region. Plus, £6m to improve 9 rail and Metro stations used by millions each year.

Blyth is at the forefront of the green energy revolution. That means great jobs for local people. We’ve invested £1️⃣m with Northumberland Skills to work with employers at the Energy Central Campus to train people. I loved meeting learners as they planned their career right here in the North East.

The North’s moment is now! This week, Northern Mayors joined Sir Brendan Foster and Deputy PM Angela Rayner to launch The Great North. Together we’ll show the world what the North has to offer, attracting investment, creating jobs and opportunity.

Forth Yards in Newcastle has stood derelict for too long. We can create 2,500 homes for local people overlooking the River Tyne. We’re working to secure the funding we need to get building. This is just one of the projects I want to see across the region to create quality affordable homes.

Our region is world class. That's our message as we launch our new investment prospectus. I’m working with businesses locally, nationally and internationally to create jobs and get growth in the North East. That means great jobs that pay a good wage for local people.

The NE is leading the way in battery manufacturing. Building EVs is vital for our future. Our plans are being backed with a £1bn investment. That’s 1000 great jobs at AESC’s new plant and 2000 construction jobs. It was great to visit with Chancellor. This is what real opportunity looks like.

On the 80th anniversary of VE Day, we pay tribute to those who served in WWII and sacrificed so much for peace. Their victory was hard fought and we have the freedom we know and love because of their bravery. We remember them. We celebrate them. We commit to peace. #VEDay80

📣 Mayor’s Opportunity Fund round 2. We’ve already supported 33 amazing organisations just like Seaham Youth & Community Centre to do great work improving lives in their local area. Now I’m launching round 2 to help more great charities and organisations to create opportunity and fight poverty.

We’re building the infrastructure of opportunity in the NE. The cost and availability of childcare is a barrier to great work. I’m piloting a Mayor’s Childcare Grant in County Durham. It’ll plug gaps in support so parents can get into work or training and give their kids the best start in life
