On Thursday we released over 800 digitised images of Dundee. These mostly show work carried out in the 1920s & 1930s, including roads, bridges, the Caird Hall, City Square, Libraries and much more. You can read more about the collection here:

Street of the Week: St Ann Street Only a small remnant of this street still exists. It is now technically part of the A923 dualled Coupar Angus Road. All that remains is the 1932-3 Corporation tenement on the corner of Balgay Street.

This lane was Doig's Entry and ran off the Overgate near number 164. The photographer is looking south away from the Overgate. This was taken c 1910. Today this would be between the Overgate centre and the old Debenhams car park. Ref: Sanitary Department Album 1 Photo 39

For last 2 years we have been working on a large project to digitise, list and sort a collection of over 800 negative images (mostly on glass) taken by the Dundee Corporation Engineers Department in the 1920s and 1930s.

Street of the Week: Castle Street This street is so named because it lies to the west of Castle Hill. The exact date of when the Dundee Castle was built is unknown it appears in records from 1290 when a custodian was appointed by Edward I of England.

The LV Abertay was built for the Dundee Harbour Trust and cost £36,000. The Abertay was launched at the Caledon Shipyard on 18 April 1939 and delivered to the Harbour Trust on 10 July 1939. It was withdrawn from service in 1984. #TransportTuesday #Dundee #Archives

Street of the Week: Bank Street Bank Street runs off Reform Street. It is so named because of the Bank of Scotland branch that sat at the entrance to the street. It was officially named by the Town Council on 3rd February 1842. Kinnaird Hall, built in 1858 as the Corn Exchange.

This is the DP&L building at 5 Shore Terrace. This photograph was taken after July 1914 then Shore Terrace was being demolished to make way for the new City Hall, later known as the Caird Hall. Date: 1914 Ref: GD/X275

Lochee West Station on the the Dundee to Newtyle Railway. This station was located near the bottom of Elmwood Road near South Road. The image is undated, but probably from the early 1960s. Ref: DCC-SA3233

Street of the Week: Fort Street, Broughty Ferry Fort Street runs from the riverside at Fisher Street up to the junction with Camperdown Street and Forthill Road. Some early maps give it the name Fort Aboukir Street - which was an alternative name for the Battle of the Nile.

Street of the Week: Queen Street Queen Street originally ran from the Seagate to the Cowgate. It was laid out in or just before 1779 as it was referred to as a new street in a document of that date. So, it is probably named in honour of Queen Charlotte, wife of George III.
