i've been obsessed with cauters as a healing mechanic for a while, so I got this idea that, once you've depleted your main healing item, your sword will heat up from deflections and can be used as a make-shift cauter for a small amount of healing

as I'm writing the lore of False Princess Iruruu, the setting somehow went from 'vague fantasy Asia' to 'semi-historical China' to 'the exact autumn of 1757 in the Qing dynasty or else the story falls apart'

refactoring the entire combat flow to pure functions turned out to be the best decision ever it became a 900 lines monstrosity of static mappers with 5+ params each, but ever since I have never been lost on where to tweak the combat system. maybe the FP evangelists were onto something

big change to the combat flow: YOU can also get disarmed even if you deflect perfectly, once your posture maxes out it'll disarm you and you'll be in unarmed mode. you have to decide whether to run for your sword or keep up the pressure, but keep in mind you'll need your sword for certain counters

We did something different with the credits for Demonschool. We used this format: name, title, lengthy description of what they did. Often you see credits in games where you don't know what the credited developer was actually responsible for. We wanted to give people proper, actual credit.

I still can't get over the fact that some excalidraw+ dev couldn't be bothered to render another thumbnail for dark mode and literally just color inverted the light mode thumbnail in CSS I wish I gave this less a fuck at my real job

sprites allll done!! I finally have an enemy with all of the counter mechanics: shockwave surfing, sword binding, and grab attacks (not seen here, checkout older vids) but now I need to do the part I've been dreading and create a proper stage for this guy (preferably with better color contrast xD)

got this flaming sword effect working with some hacky implementation to get dynamic particle emission shapes in godot not sure how I feel about the performance cost of loading a 3MB emission mask or updating the shape every single frame, but thats an issue for future me XD

iruruu's idle sprite has finally bothered me enough that I made a new one. it was in a perpetual unfinished state anyway but so was like half the old sprites so I never got to it haha

grab counter: if you time a kick into grab attack you'll do a tomoe nage and deal a fuck load of posture damage this was one of the few ideas I had when I started working on this game years ago, feels great to finally implement it

ok this has zero gameplay purpose but I added a score tracking system. of course I won't show it in game, this is for debugging, but I'm considering making a 'result screen' at the end of a run where you can check your score like a rhythm game

been sketching out characters for the game, can't wait to start making sprites of these guys
