I'm very pleased to share my new article on the python library undate, which is an ambitious in-progress effort to make it easier to work with incomplete dates and multiple calendars, building on work from Shakespeare and Company Project, Princeton Geniza Project, etc.

"Writing an essay is hard because it forces you to use your brain in ways you haven't before, and that is precisely why it's useful." For our August feature, we invited science fiction writer Ted Chiang to respond to a series of questions related to AI and its impact on humanities scholarship.

On the "three mantras of Long DH" (Futurebuilding DH) from Johannes Burgers: 1) "go slow and build things", 2) "teamwork makes the dreamwork, but nagging helps" (people-first proj management), 3) "love your data like you love yourself" (tech changes, data doesn't; set your data free!).

An email is on its way out to our members regarding strategies for navigating cuts to federal grant funding. However, we wanted to share that information here as well. We have aggregated information for actions regarding NEH grants, which include broader strategies as well.

This might be flying under the radar (so please RT!), but the US Copyright Office is soliciting comments for its decisions on training ML/NLP/AI systems on copyrighted material (even *non*-generative AI). They need to hear from researchers, so please comment! Deadline Oct 30.
