Did you know that there is a network of volunteer observers across the US that measure precipitation every day? This effort is called the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail, and Snow Network -- or "CoCoRaHS"! Become an observer today!

There's still time to pour one out for the
#GreatLakes
today on World Water Day (March 22)đź’§ Lakes Superior, Huron, Michigan, Erie, and Ontario collectively hold ~20% of the planet's freshwater - 6 quadrillion gallons! That's enough to submerge the entire continental US in nearly 10 feet of water!

I worry that the focus on NOAA's weather predicting value is ignoring the millions of other ways NOAA researchers enrich communities and local economies. There are no oysters without NOAA. There are no blue crabs without NOAA. NOAA trains teachers. NOAA is the lifeblood of coastal communities.

New data shows winters in Great Lakes region shrinking by two or more weeks since 1995
The study fills in more gaps about what goes on out in the lakes during the winter months. Until now, most Great Lakes research has been done on land.

Winter buoys are live! Thanks to our project partners at Michigan Tech, GLOS, and USCG, these hardy buoys will track otherwise-unobserved conditions in a deepwater harsh icy environment.
