I did a lot more walking on this trail run than I expected. I was having a hard time keeping my heart rate low enough. But it was such a nice way to spend the morning with Kira - we both really needed the "wildfire smoke free" time outside!

My #TrailRun in #DinosaurProvincialPark was next level! I tackled a 10km loop so I could wander through towering rock formations, spot desert plants clinging to life, and imagine the prehistoric world that once roamed here. Hot sun, dusty trails, endless views. 10/10 would recommend. #ExploreAlberta

Another great #TrailRunning race with 5 Peaks this morning! Chickakoo Recreation Area is a great spot to run. Lots of hills, cloudy, and not much mud. I beat last year's time by 6 minutes!

5 Peaks #TrailRunning race today in GoldBar #YEG. The past 24 hours of rain meant they had to reroute the course to protect the single track trail - very happy they made that call. Thought I was going pretty slow but I was pleasantly surprised when I saw my end time!

Today was full of biodiversity talk again! Our first stop was the shore of Lac la Biche where we went through some activities from Inside Education and Project Learning Tree. 1/4

This past week I had the PLEASURE of meeting Jenna - a #GrosvenorTeacherFellow from 2023 who went to Japan! I feel so fortunate to have the time to connect with her. Together we have learned about biodiversity in the boreal forest in AB. I have lots of new ideas I'm excited to try with students!

First up this morning was taking a tour of Cenvous Energy's SAGD (steam-assisted gravity drainage) oil sands drilling facilities. They use drills and pipes to get the oil out instead of open pit mines.

This is so timely to what I've been looking at this week. This is not ok.

Today was a lot to digest! We stopped at CNRL to learn about open pit oil sand mining and how they are reclaiming the land after they are done (not allowed to take pictures, sorry!) 1/3

We stopped in Lac la Biche to talk to ecologists from Alberta-Pacific Forest Industries. They showed us how they mimic fire behaviour when they are harvesting - not clear cutting squares, keeping some tree stands still standing, etc. This helps retain biodiversity and the forest can recover quicker.

So my #TrailRunning and #Backpacking training has been suffering. Rolled ankle since Monday, wildfire smoke is affecting my asthma and allergies, and it's a stressful time as a teacher in Alberta. Ugh. Any suggestions?

We took our #RainbowTrout to our local pond to be released. Before though, we tested the ponds temperature, pH level, turbidity, and dissolved oxygen level. The students determined the pond was a good fit for our fry and we watched them swim off in their new home! #FinSProgram #NaturalLearning

For #NatureJournaling we went outside to find "forces". We played on an icy hill using our journals as toboggans (friction). Then we played in the icy water (crushing). My favorite moment was "I feel like a real scientist exploring the ice!" THIS is why #HandsOn, #NatureBasedLearning is powerful!

My run with Kira today was slow and easy. She absolutely LOVES the huge dump of snow we got (close to 30cm's in 48 hours). It means no #TrailRun and the sidewalks had quite a bit of ice/snow still - hoping to get on the trails next weekend.

It was absolutely humbling to see #JasperNationalPark this week. After the devastating fires last summer, seeing the charred remains around #AnnetteLake was unlike anything I've ever seen - the trees felt like styrofoam. It will be wild to see how the ecosystem comes back in the summer.

Yesterday a teacher found a field mouse in our school. Instead of killing it, she brought it to me. It led to some GREAT questions from the students about mice before we quickly took it outside to release in a field (far enough from the school I hope). #NatureIsATeacher #Mouse #OutdoorEducation

The weather has finally warmed up enough that Kira and I got out for a run! Beautiful trail, air was fresh, and both Kira and I were in a great mood. #TrailRunning #YEGRunning #RunningWithMyDog

#TrailRun with #TrailSisters last night. The single track had some significant new snow that wasn't very packed down. It was more of an ankle conditioning walk than a run! But the view of the ski hill was spectacular!

This morning, my class saw a sundog outside of our classroom window. Very cool! This occurs when the light from the sun is refracting through ice crystals in the air. It's a relatively rare occurrence as it needs specific conditions to happen. #Alberta #Sundog #Weather

Day 1 with #Enduro3: ✔️Pros - so many more features/data than my old #garmin, GREAT battery life, screen is easy to read ❌Cons - it's a big watch! (but I'm sure I will get used to the bigger face) Does anyone else have this one? What do you think?

New watch day! Excited to give the #Enduro3 a try. I LOVED my Fenix 6S Pro. This one should help up my backpacking/hiking/trail running game.

The eggs have hatched! Our #RainbowTrout are now alevins. The little squiggly fish have a yolk sac attached to their bellies. The yolk is full of nutrients that are absorbed to help them grow and develop until they are strong enough to "hunt" for regular food!

Re-deleted Facebook and Snapchat tonight. I will miss some of the groups from Facebook but overall, I didn't find it useful. Just stressful. Anyone from #EdmontonRunningCommunity #TrailSistersEdmonton or #BackpackingBadass on here?

We have #RainbowTrout again this year! The students have been eagerly awaiting the eggs arrival. This project allows students to experience the fish's life cycle and their habitat requirements. Thank you to the Bow Habitat Station for allowing us to continue this amazing program and our school!
