For years, “FF3” meant two different games depending on your hemisphere. The real Final Fantasy III never left Japan on Super Famicom. North America’s SNES “Final Fantasy III” was actually FFVI. Numbering didn’t realign worldwide until the PlayStation era.

The US Super Mario Bros. 2 isn’t a Mario game. It’s a reskin of Famicom Disk title 夢工場ドキドキパニック (Yume Kōjō: Doki Doki Panic). The real Japanese SMB2 was deemed too brutal for the West, so Nintendo swapped the cast. Japan later imported it back as “Super Mario USA.”

Saru! Get You! (1999) was the first PS1 game ever to require dual analog sticks and was unplayable without them. Sony built the game specifically to push DualShock adoption. It worked. The Japanese title stayed "Saru Get You" across all three generations of sequels.

Japanese text in Ocarina of Time is shorter than English, saving approximately 20 minutes in 100% runs purely from faster text boxes. The Japanese N64 cartridge is also the only way to access certain version 1.0 glitches used in top runs.

Dance Dance Revolution hit Japanese arcades on September 26, 1998 as part of Konami's Bemani series. The PS1 port came in Japan 1999. North America didn't get a PS1 release until May 2001. The Japanese versions consistently had larger songlists; Western versions never received.

Between the Japan and North American releases of Super Mario 64, Nintendo made over 200 code changes. The Japanese version has no "Hello!" from Mario on the title screen, no voice acting from Peach, and one star is in plain sight that the US version hid in a block.

Japan got an original Pokemon Stadium in 1998 with 40 Pokemon in limited modes. The West never saw it. What we called "Pokemon Stadium" was Japan's sequel. The Japanese "Stadium 2" also had an exclusive Mobile Stadium feature connecting to Pokemon Crystal.

Mother 3 launched in Japan on April 20, 2006 for GBA. It never left officially. The fan translation from 2008 is one of the most celebrated in history. EarthBound Beginnings took 26 years to reach the West.

The 64DD launched in Japan on December 13, 1999 with Randnet: an online service for gaming, media sharing, and e-commerce. Announced in 1995, it never came to North America. Only 10 games released. It quietly died and took several planned N64 titles with it.

Rhythm Tengoku (GBA, 2006) was Nintendo's last first-party GBA game. Sega loved it so much they co-developed the arcade version. The West never got it because the GBA was dead by then. The whole Rhythm Heaven franchise starts here.

In North America the series was "Dragon Warrior" from 1989 until DQ8 in 2005. That was the first game to use the correct "Dragon Quest" name after Square Enix secured the trademark. Japan never had this problem.

Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade (GBA) starred Roy (think Melee) and never left Japan. Nintendo released the direct sequel worldwide and called it "Fire Emblem." Western players started mid-story without knowing it.

In Japan, Saturn outsold PlayStation at launch. Virtua Fighter sold nearly 1:1 with hardware. In North America, Sega surprise-launched it 4 months early with no retailer warning. Same console, completely different story.

When PlayStation specs leaked in 1993, Sega scrambled to bolt a second SH2 CPU onto the Saturn mid-development. It gave the hardware 8 processors. The two main CPUs couldn't share memory without conflicts. Most devs just ignored the second one.

Yu Suzuki's Shenmue (Dreamcast, Japan Dec 1999) cost an estimated $47-70 million to make. One of the most expensive games ever at the time. It didn't sell enough to recoup. Shenmue II never even got a Dreamcast release in North America.

The first Animal Crossing was Doubutsu no Mori, an N64 exclusive in Japan (April 2001). The GameCube version you know is a rebuilt port of it. The original has NES unlocks and design differences never seen outside Japan.

Sega hired Hiroshi Fujioka to play Segata Sanshiro, a judo master who attacked people for not playing Saturn. The ads ran only in Japan from 1997. His final commercial has him redirecting missile into space to save Sega.

Bomberman Max released in Red and Blue versions worldwide on GBC. A third version, Ain Version, was Japan-only and limited to 2,000 copies available only through a contest. No English patch exists. It is one of the rarest GBC releases in existence.

When Game Boy launched in Japan on April 21, 1989, one of the four launch titles was Yakuman, a mahjong game. It was never released outside Japan. North America got Tetris instead. Nintendo Switch Online's Japanese Game Boy library still carries Yakuman today.

Star Ocean: The Second Story on PS1 got a direct sequel, Star Ocean: Blue Sphere, on Game Boy Color in 2001. Japan only. It is one of the most technically impressive GBC games ever made, with fluid animation and large enemy sprites. One English patch exists.

Nintendo's 1992 Japan-only Game Boy RPG was co-developed by Intelligent Systems, the team behind Fire Emblem and Advance Wars. The character Richard from it appears in Link's Awakening with frogs in his house, a direct Easter egg for Japanese players only.

Fire Emblem launched on Famicom in 1990 and stayed Japan-exclusive for 13 years. Marth and Roy were nearly cut from Western versions of Melee because nobody outside Japan knew who they were. Fan response changed Nintendo's mind and unlocked a global franchise.

Roy was added to Melee to promote The Binding Blade before it even launched in Japan. Western players fell in love with a character from a game they could not buy. That pressure is a direct reason the GBA Fire Emblem was localized in 2003.

The first two Boktai games released worldwide. The third, Shin Bokura no Taiyou, stayed Japan-only in 2005. Still had the solar sensor. Still required real sunlight for the final boss. A 70% complete fan translation patch exists for those curious.

The Pokemon Trading Card Game on GBC got a full sequel in 2001: Pokemon Card GB2, featuring Team Great Rocket and the Team Rocket card set. IGN called an English release "likely." It never came. Japan-only to this day, though a fan translation exists.

Boktai (2003, GBA) had a real UV sensor inside the cartridge. To charge Django's solar gun, you had to go outside. Boss fights required actual sunlight. Kojima originally also wanted a garlic-breath sensor to kill vampires. Konami passed on that part.

In 1992 Nintendo released Kaeru no Tame ni Kane wa Naru (For the Frog the Bell Tolls) in Japan only. The same R&D1 team reused its engine and art style for Link's Awakening. Prince Richard even appears in Zelda as an NPC. The West never got the original.

The NES Castlevania 3 in Japan (悪魔城伝説) had a full orchestral sound chip (VRC6) built into the cartridge. The US version stripped it out. Same game, radically different soundtrack. The Japanese version sounds like a completely superior release. #Famicom

Rockman & Forte (ロックマン&フォルテ) on Super Famicom launched in 1998 — two years after the N64. Capcom never localized it because the SNES was considered dead in the West. Japan kept getting SFC releases long after the US shelves had moved on. #Capcom #SFC

In the original Japanese Famicom release of Dragon Quest, a woman offers you a "puff puff." The US Dragon Warrior version replaced it with a woman selling tomatoes. A running joke in the entire franchise, erased on western arrival. #DragonQuest #Famicom

Seiken Densetsu III (聖剣伝説3) on Super Famicom looked so good it passed for an early PS1 game. Square never localized it because the N64 was approaching and the text volume was massive. Japan-only for decades. One of the greatest SFC games ever made. #SFC

Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (悪魔城ドラキュラX 血の輪廻) stayed Japan-exclusive on PC Engine until 2010. The SNES "port" was a completely different game. IGA himself said Dracula X "does not reflect the intentions of the Rondo of Blood staff at all." #Castlevania

In Rondo of Blood, after rescuing the 12-year-old Maria Renard, she becomes a fully playable character with a double jump and animal-based attacks. The SNES port stripped her out entirely. She later appeared in the Saturn version of Symphony of the Night, Japan only.

Nintendo over-ordered Dragon Warrior cartridges after seeing the franchise dominate Japan. They could not sell them. The solution: mail a free copy to every Nintendo Power subscriber in 1990. Nearly 500,000 copies went out as a giveaway.

Akumajo Dracula X: Chi no Rondo launched on PC Engine CD in 1993 and stayed Japan-only until 2007. The West got a watered-down SNES port instead, with no alternate routes, no Maria as a playable character, and no anime cutscenes.

In Japan it is Dragon Quest. In North America it launched as Dragon Warrior because "Dragon Quest" was already a trademarked pen-and-paper tabletop RPG. The Dragon Quest name was not used in Western releases until 2003.

Nintendo of America redesigned the Super Famicom entirely for the US market. Designer Lance Barr felt the rounded Japanese shell looked too soft. The boxy SNES with purple sliders was built to look like powerful home electronics equipment, not a toy.
