My Tokay Gecko photograph got published in A Field Guide To The Reptiles & Amphibians Of Singapore this weekend. Aside from the joy of getting my photo included, this book is one of the best field guides I’ve owned. Great ID photos and even tadpole and spawn photos. Brilliant!

Singapore otters are always under the shadow of a murder of House Crows. These dark scavengers know that treats are to be found around otters. They finish off leftovers, peck unsavouries from otter spraints, and even peck unguarded tails like they are pulling the dinner bell

This little wolf of the waterways is a Smooth-coated otter. Cute and playful and a deadly predator! This beauty was tucking into lunch at one of Singapore’s most popular tourist areas.

I spotted a tiny Sumatran Gliding Lizard on a tree. Have you ever seen a lizard dance? He was dancing for a female. Tragically, he followed her to the tippy top of the tree before watching her glide away into the distance. He did his best and came up a little short this time.

This huge Atlas moth has taken a bit of damage but still looks amazing. The biggest moth in the world only lives for 2 weeks. Just long enough to produce the next generation. A flame that burns oh so brightly

This big guy on the trail in front of me today. Malayan Water Monitor - Varanus salvator

Imagine my surprise at finding this stunning White-bellied rat snake (Ptyas fusca) along the main road in urban Singapore. This was over 2 meters of snake. It was on the footpath when I found it. It slithered into an ornamental hedge and coiled.

Deep in the Malaysian rainforest in the dead of night, Bell's anglehead lizard (Gonocephalus belli) appeared to be in an intense conversation with a stick insect. No insects got eaten in the making of this image.

Another regular along my local suburban trail is the Common Palm Civet (Paradoxurus musangus). Like my fruit bat friends, these guys love a ripe fig tree

A little Lesser Dog-faced Fruit Bat (Cynopterus brachyotis) tucking into a juicy fig. When I walk my local trail at night I have hundreds of these guys above. Cute little guys 😌

Tiny little Greenhouse frog (Eleutherodactylus planirostris) on a fence. This odd little frog is accidentally introduced to Singapore. Why is it odd? It lays eggs on land and skips the tadpole phase, instead hatching into perfect miniature frogs.

Yesterday I discovered that in the tropics water scorpions grow quite big and live in small puddles in the Malaysian forest. Generally harmless, can bite.

In the darkness of the early hours in a Malaysian rainforest I found this stunning Jungle Nymph. I’ve wanted to see one since I had tiny pet stick insects as a kid. This is a very big insect

Last night’s walk in Malaysia started with a Sunda scops owl before it was even dark.

Safety first, always hold on to the handrail! Except for when there is a massive Sunda King Cobra lying along the top of the handrail 🌶️

Heavy traffic in Hong Kong. How now brown cows

The endangered Hong Kong Cascade Frog (Amolops hongkongensis) was a target species for me. I finally found one alongside a fast flowing stream after torrential rain. I nearly took an unexpected bath to get a shot, but it would have been worth it.

I got an impromptu night walk in Hong Kong. It’s hard walking new places for new species, so delighted to find my first and second Mock viper (Psammodynastes pulverulentus). These angry-faced snakes are quite harmless to humans despite their efforts to look like a deadly.
