This is a failure of journalism, on a really basic level, but it is also a failure of political leadership. It was going to fall simply in the basis of what the previous govt did. But Starmer somehow conspired to actively spread the impression it was rising.

This is the new socialism: Not state ownership as theatre. Democratic power used to change the conditions people wake up inside. A secure home. A fair rent. A council that can act. A care system that holds. A school with capacity. Demand the floor. Then build from there.

Supported housing must sit inside the national plan. People leaving care, prison, hospital, abuse, homelessness or mental health crisis need more than a room. They need support, safety, a route on. Fund it for five years at a time. Stop commissioning chaos one crisis at a time.

Every council should have the power to buy land at fair existing-use value where it is needed for social housing. Planning permission creates huge private wealth. That uplift should help build homes, schools, parks, GP surgeries and transport. Public decisions should create public value.

How do we pay? Borrow for homes that last generations. Tax land windfalls created by planning permission. Reform council tax on high-value property. Charge empty homes properly. Stop pouring public money into temporary accommodation and landlord subsidy. Fund homes, not failure.

Start here: No public land should be sold to the highest bidder while children are homeless. That should be the first law of a serious government. Public land. Public homes. Social rent. Not luxury flats with a few “affordable” units hidden in the brochure. Homes people can actually live in.

The question is not whether we can recreate 1945 or 1963. We can’t. The question is whether politics can once again make people feel that the country is being built around them, not extracted from them. That is the work. That is the priority. That is socialism made real.

A new socialism would change the culture we live inside. It would make secure housing ordinary. Public services reliable. Work dignified. Local life possible. Wealth answerable. Care visible. Education liberating. Not state control as theatre. Democratic power as lived environment.

The old argument was nationalisation versus market. The new argument is deeper. Who shapes the conditions of ordinary life? Landlords, asset funds, developers, utilities, supermarkets, care chains and platforms? Or democratic institutions with enough courage to make stability normal again?

The first priority has to be housing. Not because housing is everything. Because housing sits underneath everything. A child cannot thrive from an insecure room. A worker cannot plan from a temporary tenancy. A family cannot breathe when rent eats the wage. Housing is the social floor.

A new socialism cannot just promise to “take things back” and call that radical. If people still live with insecure rent, broken buses, exhausted councils, collapsing care, anxious schools and wages that do not hold, then the badge on the ownership form has changed. The life has not.

The great insight is that socialism was never meant to be a fetish for state ownership. Ownership was a means. The end was equality, freedom, education, security, culture, confidence, and the slow destruction of class power in everyday life. That is the test again now.

We should not soothe Reform voters or despise them. We build a kind country in which Reform’s offer becomes unnecessary. Homes, schools, wages, dignity, beauty, security. Not as slogans. As facts in the street. For our families, our communities and our country That is how grievance is beaten.

I have no patience with Labour sounding embarrassed by its own moral purpose. A party that cannot defend equality with passion should not be surprised when the public turns to men who defend resentment with theatrical certainty.

Farage offers a cheap kind of belonging: blame the migrant, mock the liberal, flatter the wounded nation. Labour needs a better patriotism. One that says Britain is not great because it remembers itself loudly, but because it chooses to become decent again.

The left forgot something we all knew: equality is not grey. It is not scolding. It is the library, the park, the decent school, the secure home, the holiday, the clean river, the confidence to live without being permanently managed by fear.

Reform grows where democratic politics has failed to civilise ordinary life. Bad homes. Mean streets. Broken services. Work without security. Towns treated as leftovers. Labour cannot answer that with caution. It must make equality visible, material and impossible to miss.
