I played through the first area of Metroid Prime 4 on Switch 2 and it's great but... there's no option to invert the Y axis for mouse controls. You can for literally everything else, but not mouse. :| I was looking forward to playing that way, but not without that option.

I was planning to build a PC this December. But the laptop I'd been using as my main machine died earlier this year, which prompted me to build it three months earlier. This was a blessing in disguise. The 64 GB RAM kit I bought in September for ~$250 is now ~$800.

I don't know where this started but I've heard a lot of people parrot some false claim that the Switch versions of Super Mario Galaxy are based on the Shield version. They are totally unrelated versions with nearly zero similarities, created independently by two different teams.

SMG1+2 technical info: The new Switch port of Super Mario Galaxy is based on the 3D All Stars version (although naturally, there are a significant number of changes). Like SMG1, SMG2 uses Hagi for graphics/audio emulation, and the code itself was compiled natively for Switch.

This floor is the most noticeably-changed texture shown from SMG1+2 so far, and wow it looks like a cheap fanmade "HD" emulator texture pack... Nice seams, by the way.

Mario Galaxy 1+2's HUD is... smaller. In like, an offputting sort of way that's hard to describe. Like, the proportions are wrong, or something. Skyward Sword HD was the same way. And given it shares the exact same scope as SMG1+2, I'm inclined to believe Tantalus did this.

Patapon 1+2 (underneath the Unity wrapper) seems to just be a PSP emulator. And it does the typical emulated re-release thing of replacing textures and whatnot at runtime. All expected, since that's what the PS4 versions were.

TotK's soundtrack is now on Nintendo Music. It seems to be identical to the Japanese CD release (minus the bonus USB with very high quality and surround sound versions of certain tracks). Which I would've considered a given, but Splatoon from last week was different from Splatune, so, shrug.

I'm honestly really glad GameChat on Switch 2 is, uh, "bad". Like, yeah, the screensharing is 2 fps, but I'd rather that than the feature hogging resources from the game.

I'm not satisfied with the explanation we got of Switch 2's backwards compatibility. We were told it's not emulation, but instead "the process of converting game data for Switch to run on Switch 2 is performed on a real-time basis as the data is read in." What does that even mean.

(🧵) I don't think I ever shared my crackpot theory about GameCube games on Switch here, so uh, here goes: 3DAS for Switch included Mario Sunshine and Galaxy. These rely on a bespoke emulator named Hagi developed by Nintendo subsidiary Nintendo European Research & Development (NERD).

I see a lot of complaints about games exclusive to a specific console, but I don't like that these almost don't exist anymore. I don't need a whole new system to play games I can already play on my PC. I only have a PS5 because of Astro Bot. I want a reason to buy an Xbox, but there's not one.

DKCRHD is based directly on the 3DS version... but it was brought into Unity. I've seen ports of games that use Unity basically as a thin porting layer, but this is maybe the first time I've ever seen major parts of the engine gutted and replaced with Unity. 'ts weird to look at.

I have not seen a single CRT reproduction shader that looks anything like an actual CRT. They, invariably, don't achieve anything other than making the picture look worse. And the fake scanlines are always the worst part. People play entire videogames this way :(

I don't get everyone saying this looks "so much better" than the final. It just looks like a less polished version of what we got? The only truly notable thing is the partner, but people complained about Bobby in Origami King being generic; this is JUST a regular chain chomp.
