#OTD 8/11/1942 #RememberRCN -U518 lands German agent, Alfred Janowski near New Carlisle in the Baie des Chaleurs, QC. The spy is captured by QPP the next day and turned over to the RCMP and used as a double agent until 1943, sending false information to Germany.

#OTD 7/11/1971 #RememberRCN - HMCS NIPIGON while operating off Bermuda, Sea King lost power on it's engines & crashed into the sea. Three aircrew were killed & not recovered. Only the navigator survived & found by rescue crew. Seas were heavy with no moon and strong winds.

6/11/1940 #RememberRCN-HMCS OTTAWA (1st) shares in sinking Italian submarine Faa di Bruno in the N. Atlantic. Credit for attack not given until re-assessment in the 1980's. First enemy vessel to be sunk in the history of the Royal Canadian Navy & 1st submarine sunk by RCN during #WWII.

#OTD 5/11/1951 #RememberRCN -HMCS ATHABASKAN bombards Chinese installations at Mumbonch’on, Korea attempting to draw fire from Chinese shore batteries that had engaged HMCS CAYUGA a few days early. Destroying several buildings, gun emplacements and a large junk.

#OTD 5/11/1950 #RememberRCN -HMCShips CAYUGA (218) & ATHABASKAN (219) encounter Typhoon Clara sailing from Sasebo, Japan to Hong Kong. Both ships received heavy damage. ATHABASKAN recovers a sailor washed overboard, CAYUGA rolled to 52 degrees, exposing the starboard propeller.

#OTD 5/11/1940 #RememberRCN -SS Beaverford (Canadian Pacific Steamships) sunk by ADMIRAL SCHEER while in convoy HX-84 in the North Atlantic. Beaverford in a heroic effort, engaged the German pocket battleship after HMS JERVIS BAY had been sunk. SEE zurl.co/prHL2

#OTD 3/11/1942 #RememberRCN -HMCS AMHERST, escorting Convoy SC-107, attacks U-402 on surface, skipper Lt. Audette directs attack from the mast. U-402 escapes, later HMCS RESTIGOUCHE attacks with depth charges, damaging both diesel engines, forcing U-402 to break off contact.

#OTD 2/11/1944 #RememberRCN -SS Fort Thompson (British) torpedoed by U-1223 east of Pointe-au-Père, St. Lawrence River. 17 crew swept away in lifeboat, rowed to Matane. Remaining crew anchored ship on south shore, next day was able to proceed to Quebec City for repairs.

#OTD 2/11/1942 #RememberRCN -HMCShips RESTIGOUCHE & ARVIDA, while escorting Convoy SC-107, find U-402 on the surface & illuminate with starshell. Forcing U-boat to dive, disrupting it's attack on convoy. RESTIGOUCHE avoided four torpedoes fired by U-381 during attack on U-402.

#OTD 2/11/1942 #RememberRCN -SS Rose Castle (Dominion Steel and Coal Company, Halifax) & PLM 27 (French) torp by U518 while anchored in Conception Bay NF, killing 40 sailors. Second daring U-boat attack at Belle Isle, 1st on 5 Sep 1942 by U513 sinking Lord Strathcona & Saganaga.

#OTD 31/10/1943 #BattleOfAtlantic -U1061 Damaged by a Wellington from 407 Sqn @RCAF_ARC, dropping 6 six depth charges ahead of the conning tower of U1061. Their attack was followed by a B-24 from 224 Sqn RAF. The U1061 severely damaged, managed to escape to Maloy, Norway.

#OTD 31/10/1943 #BattleOfAtlantic -U537 Attacked by a Hudson from 11 Squadron @RCAF_ARC off Cape Race, Newfoundland. Eight rockets fired at U-Boat, all missed. U537 had just set up an automatic weather station in Martin Bay, Labrador on 22 October 1943. Photo -Shearwater Aviation Museum

#OTD 30/10/1951 #RememberRCN -HMCS CAYUGA is straddled by several shells from Chinese 75 mm guns while anchored in a “safe zone” near Sok-To, Korea. Dropping her anchor, CAYUGA backed out of the range of the guns, crushing her own sea boats secured astern of the destroyer.

#OTD 30/10/1942 #BattleOfAtlantic -U658 Sunk by Hudson from 145 Squadron Royal Canadian Air Force 320 miles east of St. John’s, NF. Aircraft was providing air cover for Convoy SC-107.
