“At this moment, we remain very much engaged in these negotiations,” she told reporters Wednesday. “These conversations are productive and ongoing.”
The press secretary said “we feel good” about the prospects for a longer-term deal and that it would “obviously” be in Iran’s best interest to “meet the president’s demands.”
“I think he’s made his red lines in these negotiations very clear to the other side, and so we are continuing to see how these conversations go,” she said.
Ms. Leavitt said there are “discussions” about holding another in-person meeting, which she said would “very likely” again take place in Islamabad, praising the Pakistanis for their role as mediator.
“The Pakistanis have been incredible mediators throughout this process,” she said. “They are the only mediator in this negotiation. While there have been many countries around the world who want to offer their help, the president feels it’s important to continue to streamline this communication through the Pakistanis.”
The press secretary also declined to provide a timeline for how long the U.S. blockade of Iranian ports would last, but made clear that U.S. forces are only restricting vessels that would benefit Iran’s economy.
“We are supporting the freedom of navigation, just not with respect to any tanker or vessel that would benefit the economy of Iran as these negotiations continue,” she said.
The U.S. military said overnight that it had “fully implemented” the blockade, with more than 10,000 soldiers, as well as dozens of planes and warships, being used for enforcement.
Within the first 48 hours, American warships issued warnings to nine vessels, prompting them to turn around, U.S. Central Command said.
In response to the U.S. blockade, Iran’s military threatened to halt all shipping in the region.
