Call me a gamer because I'm dropping more slurs. Specifically #HEMA slurs, but I feel like this one could apply to most online history discourse.

Wake up babe, a new #HEMA slur dropped. This one probably has more venom in it because I do think there is an innate problem with traditionalism as a political ideology, not just with it's appearance in HEMA. Unlike the other slurs where I'm mostly just trying to understand a weird perspective.

Do you #larp? Have you ever crossed trained #fencing or #HEMA to get better at combat? What was the most useful advice you received?

Been adding more #fencing specific fitness to my week to try and up my lunge for tournament season. Mostly doing jump squats and sprints when I have the space. Really fun.

Something #HEMA does better than a lot of sports is cater to social players. Like most sports only put effort into producing Olympians, but with #HEMA it’s really normal that someone will fence three or four times a week and go to sword camps for no other reason than it’s fun.

It’s kind of amazing how good fencing all morning, eating a pub lunch then napping feels. It’s what evolution has built me for.

The problem with #HEMA is different HEMAists think it’s a different hobby. There’s: •Thinks HEMA is modern fencing but with historical weapons •Thinks HEMA is MMA but with weapons •Thinks HEMA is reenactment combat but with modern protective gear •Thinks HEMA is European kenjitsu

I am really hopeful that the new Warhammer Quest will let me use heroes from other Warhammer Quest games, mostly because I just got the Wood Elf hero from Cursed City and I'd like to play them in an Old World setting.

Do you ever get fidgety and just start practicing #fencing moves?

As much as meeting in a tavern in #D&D is fine if you want some alternatives consider: The party meets on a ship as they sail somewhere. The party is all summoned by a quest giver (like a queen or magistrate) to complete a task for them. The party all start a job at the same place at the same time.

When #fencing a really good way to improve is to reflect on why you react the way you do when fencing, what ques are prompting those reactions and if you could react better. But also think about what precedes those ques, since that will help you see things coming better.

With #RPGs do you role play between sessions using things like group chats or discord servers? What kind of things do you do?

Fandoms have become the dominant model for community organising, largely because they are a model of community that is encouraged by capitalism.

I have a #worldbuilding problem. I want to make an #rpg world with humans and dinosaurs, based on a specific prehistoric period, and as scientifically accurate as I can be. Only issue is humans tend to kill off megafauna when they arrive in an area, but I want to have large dinosaurs in the setting.

Sometimes the real win is being the hottest fencer at the #HEMA tournament.

In #HEMA you tend to get people who want to work things out for themselves and struggle with receiving instruction. While it’s frustrating to watch them slowly reinvent the wheel the best approach is to ensure that the #fencers around them have coherent #fencing to push them in the right direction.

Something endemic among #sword tubers, especially the old guard, is overestimating knowledge. Often they can present as experts when their knowledge extends barely beyond having handled a weapon. As a #HEMA coach and occasional video creator, I live in fear that I might be the same and not realise.

My #fencing has been a mess recently. I think part of it is I've crashed out after my last tournament, but a big part of it is that my brain has switched into exploration mode so I'm not fencing competitively this year, but emotionally I'm still trying to be competitive (which I should change).

An increasing number of women are pulling on up to 40 kilograms of steel armour to take part in historic medieval combat.

Heck! I've hit the point with my coaching where I'm needing to worry about if a blade interaction with steel will work similar enough with a boffer for a drill to work.

I just want to remind everyone that while boob armour is in no way historical dick armour most certainly is.

Something that’s been surprisingly good for my leg strength is stepping down two steps when I go downstairs. Like I’m able to sit lower more comfortably in like a little over a week of doing it. It’s been really good.
