In the early hours after a police killing, almost all information available to reporters comes from police sources. That initial narrative often shapes public perception long before independent facts emerge.

After a police killing, the same institution controls the scene, the evidence, and the initial narrative. Independent review often comes later — if it comes at all.

Justice cannot depend on who holds power.

In states without the death penalty, the state claims it cannot execute people through the courts — yet police are still permitted to impose death on the street without trial or due process. That contradiction rarely gets named.

Qualified immunity is about power, not protection.
