As always the presentation by @salisburyfish.bsky.social was great! Using Single nuclei RNAseq data she identified genes that seems to explain why some salmonids (such as coho or pink) are resistant to sealice when others (Atlantic and chum) are susceptible

Day 3 of #ISGA. I did not report in all the talks of yesterday. They were all super good I'll try to summarise a few here today but since everything is highly relevant I'm struggling to multitask... Today's plenary was an overview of oyster production and selection in France by Romain Morvezen

Really cool presentation at #ISGAXV from Batya Dorfman on disentangling the component of disease resistance (susceptibility transmissibility and survival) of Cyprind fish species to CyHV-3. They looks at infection response in multiple challenge models with 5 carps species

The Genetics and genomic of diseases session is going strong at #ISGAXV 🦐🐟🦪🧬🖥️ We heard from Duwage C.G. Rodrigo (Jeju Uni, Korea) about resistance to M avidus in olive flounders. Polygenic + heritable = genomic selection to improve resistance in the population ✅

Day 2 of #ISGAXV, in the plenary Anna Sonesson from Nofima (Norway) gave us her insights on how to design breeding programmes to integrate gene editing. GE is a very promising tool to increase disease resistance when the causal gene is known, to quickly fix a favourable allele in the population 🧬🐟

Have you heard about IPNv and salmonids? Maybe you know that there is a major QTL that was identified in A. Salmon in 2008/2009... Well this time there is major QTLs identified in rainbow trout for the same disease ! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...

Still at #ISGAXV and attending the last session of the day.🧬🖥️🐟🦪🦐 Earlier there was a presentation by Pierrick Haffray (SYSAAF) on accounting for molt stages in genetic evaluation of 🔵🦐. Showing that time to molt was heritable but molt stages wasn't in their dataset (late measurement)

Back from lunch at #ISGAXV and it's time for quantitative genetics and breeding 🧬🖥️ and we started with Cécile Massault presenting her model that captures the additive genetic host-donor interaction in pearl oyster, looking at incorporating it in breeding programme for pearl size 🦪

Disease resistance is key to sustainable aquaculture and increased animal welfare. In his talk today at #ISGAXV Zhi Weng (Tropical futures institute, James Cook uni) showed that barramundi resistance to SDDV is heritable and can be increasing, in field, through selection using controlled challenge

Does integrating functional annotation data in genomic prediction models improve the accuracy of the prediction? In livestock it depends on the trait, the species, and the type of functional data... With mixed results. We're more and more interested in testing this in aqua species #ISGAXV 🧬🖥️ 🐟

Back after coffee at #ISGAXV and another talk on feed efficiency, by Prof Peng Xu from Xiamen University. Using feeding stations inspired by the dry livestock world they developed an automatic real time model to measure individual feed intake in tanks and managed to improve FCR 🧬🖥️🐟

The final talk at #ISGAXV before the coffee break was about rocks, oh no sorry, oysters! Rodrigo Marín-Nahuelpi on assessing the genetic architecture and GS for growth related traits in eastern oyster 🦪 (C. virginica) A frist study in this population from Canada.

Very good presentation of Zhi Ye from Ocean University of China on using histone modifications markers to improve the accuracy of genomic selection in white leg shrimps. Using a BayesA model and SNPs located in histone modifications regions they improved GS accuracy by 5-7% compared to random SNP

Bing Liang from Tropical Futures Institute and James Cook University (Singapore) showed that for an optimal genomic selection for harvest traits in Malabar red snapper we need 5000 SNP and between 1200 and 1600 fish in the reference population. BayesR performed better than GBLUP for some traits

Now at #ISGAXV it's the Genomic selection section, with a first talk from @marc-vdp-inrae.bsky.social presenting their results of selecting for feed efficiency in European sea bass. Starting with the individual recording of FCR and DGC in their cool "single fish per aquarium" system in Palavas

It's a much improved version of the preprint (thanks to reviewers and editors and to Florence Phocas (INRAe)

I've just checked the programme of a symposium that I am attending in 2 weeks #ISGAXV. As usual with ISGA, the talks are super promissing with really good speakers and I'm expecting high quality presentations! HOWEVER (and that is a big however) we are a long long way from gender balance... 🙄 👩‍🔬

📢 A really great study by Dr Robert Mukiibi and colleagues from #AQUAFAANG on seabass resistance to VNN virus: bmcbiol.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.... Using multi-omics approached they detected a major QTL and identified causative mutations in the promoter regions of IFI27L2A genes! 🧬💻 🐟 🧪

Yesterday was my first time in a PhD's defence, as a jury! Although it was not about me but about the new Dr who successfully defended his work, I felt it was a milestone for me, as an ECR! I was stressed and thrilled and I felt a sense of belonging to my research community. It was great! 👩🏻‍🔬🐟 🧪🧬
