Come to the carnival.....come to the cabaret in Normal Town
Yesterday I came across a amazing set of Johnny Hodges/Ellington original HMV mono LPs in their original box. They in such good condition for LPs released in 1960 I pretty sure one owner and that owner did the lovely handwritten notes on box.

Ruth Shelton: Three seasonal poems
In the Beginning Star begins the songbreaking her strings from untimed waitingagitating the void, calling along constellations, grazing unknown suns.Chords gather, surge with the tides, grating, rattling the shore, breaking into runs to meet utterance. Now there are words;mountains, sheep, angel, a story starting like firein the wind. âNow, nowâ sing the birds in the cityâs trees.

REVIEW: Full Body Reclaim by Caroline Stancer (Five Leaves) â Neil FulwoodÂ
An established figure on the East Midlands literary scene as one half (with Birgit Friedrich) of the poetry collective Dandelions, Caroline Stancer makes her publishing debut with Full Body Reclaim, a handsomely produced pamphlet in Five Leavesâ New Poetry series. Whereas many first volumes hint at a voice beginning to find itself, or something taking shape that points towards the promise of the future (âCritics, hold your fire,â as Vernon Scannell put it: âthe best is yet to comeâ), what we have here is more like a showreel: a confident demonstration of Stancerâs talent and capabilities.

FAR FROM NOTTINGHAM: THE INSIDE TRACK ON ALAN SILLITOEâS THE GENERAL â Neil Fulwood
Although well-received in some quarters (âSillitoe scores a hat trickâ - Punch), The General confounded many people. Highly anticipated after the one-two of Saturday Night and Sunday Morning and The Loneliness of the Long-Distance Runner, here was a curious fable, miles removed from the back-streets of Nottingham, its twin protagonists the titular military type and a standoffish orchestra conductor who ends up as his prisoner.

LEAFE PRESS: Alan Baker your guide.
LEAFE PRESS Leafe Press publishes poetry, mainly of the modernist / post-modernist variety. It's a 21st century press and a digital press; it was founded in April 2000 with a launch at Nottingham Central Library and was run with digital printing and desk-top publishing software, which was still new, and which was helped by my working in the IT industry. The press is named after Leafe Close, the street I was living in at the time, and that was named after James Leafe, one of the munitions workers killed in the Chilwell explosion of 1918 who would probably be bemused that a poetry publisher was named after him.

THE GOOD LIFE: SOCIALISM IN SURBITON â Robert Kenchington
This year marks the 50th anniversary since the original broadcast of one of the most beloved of British television series, The Good Life. Created and written by John Esmonde and Bob Larby, the series' premise is well known: namely the highs and lows of a middle-aged suburban couple who decide to quit the rat race and become self sufficient in contrast to the affluent, acquisitive lifestyle of their upwardly mobile neighbours.

Fifty years is a long time in politics... and it was fifty years ago that four young anti-militarists in Aberdeen were arrested under the arcane charge of Incitement to Disaffection. I was one of those accused of trying "to seduce a member of Her Majesty's Forces from their duty". Though I doubt whether I've ever seduced anyone in my life, in this case it was for giving members of the armed forces the leaflet…

ALAN MORRISON ON THE ALDERBANKÂ WADE
(Adapted from the Preface to The Alderbank Wade) I first developed a fascination with the political and religious nuances surrounding the English Civil War, or as it is termed in Marxian historicism, the English Revolution, and subsequent Republic, at 19 when I spent one summer voraciously reading various books on the subject. What particularly fascinated me was how a whole nation could be hurled into internecine conflict, in part, because of ideas, as opposed to territorial or tribal reasons, and to such an extent that it divided families and communities across the country.

REVIEW: Yours Cruelly, Elvira: Memoirs of the Mistress of the Dark by Cassandra Peterson (Hachette) â Neil FulwoodÂ
Cassandra Peterson has had quite the life. Bullying mother. Rough diamond father. Traumatic childhood accident (pan; boiling water). Socially awkward. Suddenly voluptuous. Go-go dancer in her mid-teens. Showgirl while still a good few years off being able to buy a drink legally. Self-styled âvirgin groupieâ. Accidental tourist, grand-touring Europe on a wing, a prayer, a hustle and zero budget. Extra in a Fellini opus.

Whatâs the weirdest zombie film youâve ever seen? Zombeavers? Fido? Anna and the Apocalypse? Iâll see you and Iâll raise you: David Gladwellâs Requiem for a Village. Gladwell is mainly remembered as the editor of Lindsay Andersonâs If⊠and O Lucky Man!, and Requiem for a Village is, well, not remembered at all. Now listening to one of my favourite early 1990s 'alt-country' although I think more power-pop/indie LPs. I had the chance to meet and interview Freedy a few years later but missed the boat. Consistent songwriter but this is probably his masterpiece. More info.

ME AND ARTHUR SEATON: A PERSONAL ODYSSEY THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY MORNING: Neil Fulwood
There had been working class novels before. But theyâd generally been written by middle class authors slumming it for the sake of material. When Alan Sillitoe burst onto the literary scene in 1958, the difference was palpable. Saturday Night and Sunday Morning was the real thing. It was in-your-face, attitudinous, unapologetic and fired up with fighting spirit. This is how the novel starts: twenty-something anti-hero Arthur Seaton (played to belligerent effect by Albert Finney in Karel Reiszâs film version), a lathe operator on piecework rates â ie.
