Field trip day, looking at avalanche defenses in the region around Ísafjörður. Takeaways: 1. community economies and leaders are still devastated by the losses of thirty years ago, and 2. they have been really busy building and improving the defenses since I was last here 15 years ago.

The officers who were among the first responders to the big urban avalanches in Iceland's Westfjords thirty years ago presented today on their experience. It was heart-wrenching hearing the stories of neighbors digging in a blizzard, and seeing the photos of those lost, mostly children.

Left the Arcturus and skipper Louis Hoock in Suva this morning; shared a ride with fellow sailor Alec Hughes over to Nadi, where I am staying near the airport for tomorrow's flight north, and Scott is off on a surfing adventure.

We reached the big city of Suva, Fiji today on the Arcturus. With around 100,000 people, it is the cosmopolitan center of the Pacific. The waterfront is industrial; the city gorgeous. The Fiji Museum, with its large collection of traditional watercraft, was a highlight.

Wind was a little light today, but I got a little kiting in on the 12m Ozone Enduro, and we got in good demo time, including self-rescue. Then we went snorkeling. The number of brilliant fish in the shallows within 70m of the shore was amazing; the colors indescribable!

Left for the outer islands today. The little dot in the dawn photo is a flying fox, a bat the size of an eagle. We are stoked to be anchored up tonight in a sheltered cove with a nice sandspit to kite from tomorrow! We still have internet, so here's a post.

Our team is finally assembled, the storm has passed, and we are prepared to set sail and begin the journey from Tonga to Fiji tomorrow. Morning swim, bright blue skies, steady breeze, wonderfully friendly and helpful locals, and gorgeous sunset made for a wonderful day. Vava'u, Tonga.
