Two new things I've learned about #Subnautica recently upon replay. 1) Getting damage to an above ground base is a huge problem because the damage is invisible. Have to just rebuild randomly. 2) There's quite a lot of resources around the floating island; not a bad base spot. #Gaming

If you're trying to convince your friends to spend time on Bluesky rather than X, maybe show them this. X is not "the public town square" or about "free speech." It's "just what Elon Musk wants you to see." If you see stuff he doesn't like he'll step in to make sure you don't see it for long.

About done with mechanic to make NPC flee from flashlight beam. First added generic Retreating state to NPCs with RetreatCondition interface, then added retreat condition where NPC is in generic cone, then extended that so cone is flashlight range & spot angle. So far works well. #GameDev #IndieDev

BTW, I do not just randomly add stuff to my game architecture. Everything I add has a purpose for the game I am working on. My latest addition of an NPC Retreat state is needed for some ghostly apparitions I will be adding soon.

I've finished adding a new Retreating state for NPCs. Possible states now include Patrolling, Waiting, Chasing, Attacking, Wandering, and Retreating.

I need to add one more dev support feature in game: invulnerability+free camera mode. It's really hard to monitor game events only from constrained character perspective. I need to be able to fly above without dying to monitor and then adjust how events unfold. #GameDev #IndieDev

Loving this new script I created. Instead of having to go out to my logging system config to change levels, now I can set up groups and change the levels from the inspector (script attached to my main DDOL game object). I like this so much better. #GameDev #IndieDev #Unity3D

Trying out Unity PostProcessScene to auto-configure objects between several pre-defined rigidbody configurations. Add just my pre-defined UnifiedRigidbodyScript to an object and the post processor will pick it up and handle generic config. Can be overridden as needed. #GameDev #IndieDev #Unity3D

Things seem simpler than they are in practice. I initially paused all sound while in menu. But sound helps if the player is in settings and adjusting sound levels. To address this, I turn sound back on while in settings. Pun intended meaning, it's never as simple as it sounds. #GameDev #IndieDev

Two biggest hits to perf/FPS I've seen so far in dev: 1) Mass placing grass (even with LODs), 2) volumetric clouds using particle system, which I did away with and use custom shader now, but still bigger hit than I'd like; will have to add setting to turn off for potato gamers. #GameDev #IndieDev

If you want to do your own sound, Audacity is quite good. Amplify, low/high pass filtering, and noise reduction alone can do amazing things. For recording, I use a Zoom H1essential 32-bit float stereo recorder, and I'm happy with it. Just finished new footstep sounds tonight. #GameDev #IndieDev

I have a point/vertex on a Unity terrain that changes it's height on it's own slightly; seems linked to perspective of camera. Floating point precision issue? World position roughly at (63, 99, 31). Not a bug I was expecting or even want to deal with. #Unity3D #GameDev #IndieDev

I'm trying to use quads for a procedural mesh. I use SetIndicies(quads, MeshTopology.Quads, 0) for this. Unity breaks the quads into triangles, but for each quad, I find the two triangles have opposite winding orders and face opposite directions. How do I manage this? #Unity3D #GameDev #IndieDev

Working on new procedural mesh for what I call "soft terrain". This can be used, for example, for snow or mud footprints. First test tonight had no errors and looked basically right in the editor, but was not visible. I used SetIndicies to set quads, maybe a problem there? #Unity3D #IndieDev

With multiple scenes, I was manually loading start scene in editor to use Play. Can get around this by creating object with script in other scenes that calls SceneManager.LoadScene([start scene]) in Awake() if DDOL singletons are null. Still get a few errors, but works. #Unity3D #IndieDev #GameDev
