Our #siteoftheweek is Old English Poetry in Facsimile (OEPF). This is a collaborative, open-access resource of facsimile editions, linking together moments of manuscript images, transcriptions, editorial annotations and translations of Old English poetry, to better allow people to study these works.

Today we end our series of #tomorrowsresearch. For over 2y, we have posted weekly about a discovery in the collection. Now that we are preparing for the actual relocation, we are bringing this series to a close with a few photos that did not make it into a separate post.

On Monday, we were visited by our colleagues from the manuscripts and rare books department of the KBR, the Royal Library of Belgium. We showed them some works linked to university history, as well as items from important donors.

Our #siteoftheweek is IThAC which aims to study the reception of ancient theatre in 16th-century Europe through an analysis of the scholarly paratexts devoted to it at the time, and to make the translation of this corpus into French available to the scholarly community.

Copyright as we know it today dates back to the 19th century. The pioneering role of France is evident in this work from 1794 (or l'an 3), which includes a ‘Décret de la convention nationale concernant les contrefacteurs’ from 1793 at the front. #rarebooks #tomorrowsresearch

The International Dunhuang Programme provides access to images, information and educational resources on manuscripts, printed material and other objects from locations along the Eastern Silk Roads via its online platform.

Tomorrow, 15 August, we celebrate the Assumption of Our Lady and the library will be closed. #service-announcement Print of the Assumption of Mary by Henri Hendrickx and William Brown, published in Mechelen by François Pierre Jean Hanicq in Mechelen in the first half of the 19th century (GA00985).

The difference in death between those who have led a good life and sinners is clearly highlighted on this frontispiece, especially in the illustrations. For the intended audience of this ‘Qvadriga æternitatis’ from 1619 (RA54207), this was probably a clear message. #rarebooks #tomorrowsresearch

Parchment that was no longer read was often used to reinforce book bindings (1st pic). Sometimes printed paper was also used for this purpose (2nd pic). But ca 130y later, we find it regrettable that ex dono's were glued onto paper that was once labelled as unusable. #rarebooks #tomorrowsresearch

Our #siteoftheweek is the Thomson Index of Slavonic Translation Literature. The aim of the project is to preserve, digitize and extend access to this card index in order to preserve Thomson’s academic legacy as well as to promote + support further research in the field of Byzantine-Slavonic studies.

In 1773, Michael Rousseau copied an administrative text about Liège, now MS. 1886 in our collection. He apparently attached great importance to his book, because he added a curse against potential thieves: “Si quis in hunc librum furtivos injecerit ungues, pendebit collo vincula dura suo”.

This annotated Greek-Latin edition of the works of Euripides, in four volumes, is bound differently from other copies of this title. According to a typed note at the front, this specific binding was requested by “Brunck”, who also wrote the notes.

The artwork “In Motion, In Learning, In Changing” by Elif Erkan has ‘a coat of arms with a book being handed down from heaven', which, according to the artist, refers to ‘to an early KU Leuven book seal and the importance of religion at the old university’. #leuven1425

Summer exhibition in the University Library! From 1900 onwards, the American magazine The Saturday Evening Post had its cover designed by an artist for sixty years. The choice of subject was free. Only artists with a reputation were allowed to submit, being accepted was the highlight of a career.

In the 19th c. manuals on phtography and other arts certainly came in handy. In 1877, an anonymous author wrote this ‘Manuel de peinture, de photographie et d’autres techniques’, now ms. 1844 in our collection. He or she even added a few drawings, such as a photographer in a ‘station à la campagne’.

The PASSIM research tool provides access to a database of metadata on antique and medieval works and their manuscript transmission, with a focus on Latin patristic sermons. #siteoftheweek

Ms. 1343 is a recently catalogued #manuscript consisting of 8 v., of which several are titled ‘Mes souvenirs’. The anonymous work can be dated to the 1790's. Some of the memories were sentimental, as is testified by an artfully knotted lock of hair in a specifically designed bag at the back of v. 2.

During the years of the Republican calendar (1792-1805), prize books were also given to outstanding students. It is striking that this time it is not a religious work, but classical Latin poetry (7A4818). #tomorrowsresearch #rarebooks

In this 1607 edition (RA69999), we find both handwritten and printed maculature. Unfortunately, in 1894, the staff of the ‘Library of the Ahurah (?) House’ stuck an ex dono on the page from the glossar(i)um, so large parts of it are no longer legible. #rarebooks #tomorrowsresearch

Dutch and Flemish education researchers are now in Leuven for their annual gathering. The programme also includes a visit to the University Library, where the visitors can admire lecture notes and rare books from the Old University, as well as education-related works from the 19th to the 21st c.

The exams have started, both in secondary school and university. Those who want to know what pupils needed to know for the subject of mathematics in the 18th c. can find it in the ‘Academia Mathematica or Oeffen-school van de Wiskonst’, written by Bruges teacher Jan Vaerman (RA44551).

For the last #Neolatin lesson of this academic year, Professor Raf Van Rooy brought his students to the University Library. They read a passage from #Erasmus' “Moriae Enconmium” (“In Praise of Folly”) in various editions, and then looked at some other humanist works together.

This beautiful binding around a 16th-century miscellaneous work (R5A15277) is sure to be appreciated – figuratively speaking – by bibliophiles. And it was apparently enjoyed – literally – by bookworms. #rarebooks #tomorrowsresearch

Our #siteoftheweek is Atlomy. This is an open access atlas and lexicon of Greco-Roman anatomical ideas, terminology and research. The team studies ancient texts by combining historical and philological analysis with empirical research and high-quality digital and visual design.

Provenance research is important, and stamps can help with that, but of course you shouldn't go too far. Fortunately, such overt practices are now a thing of the past (at least we do hope so). #tomorrowsresearch #rarebooks

‘Accidit in puncto, quod non speratur in anno’ or ‘In a moment, everything you hoped for in a year can happen’. This motto of Ferdinand I (1503-1564), the younger brother of Emperor Charles, can be found in the handwritten bookplate of a certain Georgius Maija (?), written in 1759.
