Doing a very sentimental ring from my personal collection for today’s jewel of the day. It looks unassuming at first, but has some interesting family (and Hollywood) history tied to it. 🧵

Pulled out some extra special pieces for date night yesterday: a Georgian agate collar, made around 1820, and Victorian Bohemian garnet earrings from around 1890. Agate and garnets are one of my favorite gem pairings.

There's an exhibition at the Cloisters on love, sex, and gender in the middle ages currently that I am *extremely* excited to see in November. Here's a few of the (many) items from it that are already haunting me.

JOTD: a haunting piece of trench art from the front lines of WW1. This badge likely served as a personal devotional or protective charm, worn by a soldier facing the realities of warfare. The memento mori/sacred text combo reflects the emotional extremes of the time: faith, mortality, fear, hope.

Let’s start my jewel series off with this rare Medieval ring! 19th c. collectors named this ring style "tart mold" due to the bezel's resemblance to a pastry crust. Early examples are seen in the 12th c., but the style remained in fashion into the 13th-14th centuries, around when this ring was made.
